Apologetics 301 Guidelines

If you think this is the area where you tell everyone you are sorry for eating their lunch out of the fridge, it probably isn't the place for you

This forum is open discussion between atheists and all theists to defend and debate their views on religion or non-religion. Please respect that this is a Christian-owned forum and refrain from gratuitous blasphemy. VERY wide leeway is given in range of expression and allowable behavior as compared to other areas of the forum, and moderation is not overly involved unless necessary. Please keep this in mind. Atheists who wish to interact with theists in a way that does not seek to undermine theistic faith may participate in the World Religions Department. Non-debate question and answers and mild and less confrontational discussions can take place in General Theistics.

    As I stated here....

Somebody mentioned Samson. I'm not sure that's really a strong example of suicide because he was sacrificing his life for a greater purpose - which Jesus said is the greatest form of love.

Actually, I noted my mild surprise that nobody had mentioned him:

He usually gets dragged into these discussions, and I agree it's not a strong example -- any more than a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his buddies.

It doesn't show up as spinning on my computer but I removed it anyway.

I was kidding. But it looked like it SHOULD be spinning, and I used to live much closer to the coast, so.....

There can be times when the pain someone is in is such physical torture that death would be a relief.

A few years ago I had a hernia in my groin. The docs couldn't do anything because I had another condition that precluded me having the hernia operation. The pain meds they gave me hardly worked at all. Sometimes I would be ok, but at night, at times it would feel like someone was dragging a spike through my intestines. I actually prayed for God to please take me just to relieve the pain. I thought about suicide, but I knew the pain was temporary and eventually they could do the operation (they did)

So I can see how someone could wish for death or even take their own life if they are in such pain that death would be a relief.

By far the overwhelming number of suicides do not involve physical pain. They involve mental illness. Yes, some suicides involve overwhelming pain. and are suicide by most often pain killing drugs.

I hate even entertaining questions about suicide in general because so many times people who are asking... are asking about themselves (or who are going out of their way to read about the subject). I don't want to do anything even inadvertently that convinces them that it'll be okay to go ahead and do it.
