  • Obed the son of Mahlom?

In the book of Ruth, Boaz takes Ruth as his wife in order to raise up sons to Ruth's deceased husband Mahlon. So shouldn't the genealogy say Obed the son of Mahlon, instead of the son of Boaz?

"Moreover, I have acquired Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of Mahlon, to be my wife in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased will not be cut off from his brothers or from the court of his birth place; you are witnesses today." (Ruth 4:10)

    Blessings,
    Lee

"What I pray of you is, to keep your eye upon Him, for that is everything. Do you say, 'How am I to keep my eye on Him?' I reply, keep your eye off everything else, and you will soon see Him. All depends on the eye of faith being kept on Him. How simple it is!" (J.B. Stoney)

That would depend on Obed's birth order. As far as I recall, only the firstborn would take the name of the deceased; remaining sons would be attributed to Boaz.

I recommend you do not try too hard and ...research as little as possible. Such weighty things give me a headache. - Shunyadragon, Baha'i apologist

Yes, though it does seem Obed is the firstborn:

"Then the women said to Naomi, 'Blessed is the LORD who has not left you without a redeemer today...' " (Ruth 4:14)
