The problem with Trump's trade war with China -- or one of the problems -- is he already showed China his hand. Trump's incessant boasting and praising his own success because of the record market highs (which is really a result of the federal reserve's actions of low interest rates, something even he admitted during the election) was a mistake because China now knows that if the stock market takes a plunge because of the trade conflict, and so close to his reelection, Trump will be more likely to submit to a deal less in his favor. IOW, market highs + Trump's boasting that he's so great because of the market highs + reelection = advantage China.
