  • California's Mistreatment and Neglect of the Homeless Causing Public Health Crisis

They are now complaining about being overrun by rats.

There are a lot of issues in play but ultimately, this is California's fault. They extend benefits to attract economic migrants, most illegally here. They are systematically running upper and middle class people out of the state with high taxes and prohibitive regulation. Selfsame regulation is preventing sensible construction of the needed low income housing - as well as middle class housing.

Now there are tens of thousands of people living - and defecating - in the streets of both San Francisco and Los Angeles.

California needs to tend its own house NOW. Right now. There's no sense in having tent cities moving about major metropolis'. Get with the program, California!

That’s one of the reasons we won’t go to California once I’m out of the military. The state is slowly turning into a two class state where you have the ultra rich, living in luxury and the rest.

Yeah Dr. Drew predicted all this and the plague months ago. California cities are turning into medieval nightmares. Sewage in the street, rats, diseases.

What gets me is that this is where the liberal socialists have all the power. They run the government, they are the majority of the population in these cities, so why don't they enact the policies they keep trying to force on the rest of the country and fix their cities? Free housing! Free food! Free Medical! Get to it liberals! Show us evil capitalists how it should be done. Clean up your own back yard before you start trying to tell us how to live.

California should be the shining example of a socialist paradise, right?

That's kinda the model of socialism, eh?

I think what perfectly highlights California’s problems is my parents house. It’s a standard, single family, one story home, with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Most of the country it would be valued in the low to mid 100’s. In Southern California, 2 hours outside LA, it’s valued in the mid 200’s. Closer to LA, you’d likely need to add 100k more. How could a middle class or even upper middle class family afford this? We estimated that we’d have to make 15-20k more, just to break even. That’s why California is turning into a two class state. The middle class is selling off their houses to pocket 100k plus, and move to a more affordable area. The only problem is they are voting for the same terrible policies they fled from.

Are those nearly 30 year old houses, with a little over 1200 square feet?

In my area, there aren't a whole lot of those available (massive growth in the last 20 years); those would probably be in the mid-200s. Even townhomes in my area start in the 300s.

Speaking of affluent areas and the homeless:

West Palm Beach is blasting Baby Shark to keep the homeless from sleeping on the porch of a city owned building.

                      https://www.foxnews.com/us/west-palm...m-banquet-hall

I was thinking about starting a thread the other day on the ethics of keeping the homeless out of certain areas. Keeping them off the property of specific buildings is one thing. One thing that totally crosses the line in my view was what one city I used to live in did: Dead in the middle of winter, they went into the woods and razed the makeshift buildings in a camp. One of the homeless people showed up at the city council and asked if it was legal to prevent himself from freezing to death (all the shelters were full).

Yeah, I saw that story. the mayor (I think) was talking about finding actual solutions for the homeless - but in the meantime they need to make money off the facility.

Yeah, I see their point - but people with no where to go need a safe place to sleep up.

There has got to be a better way.

On a recent episode of his DRDAD (Dr. Drew After Dark) program with Seth Green, and again earlier this week in a guest appearance on The Five, he opined that the "housing shortage" is at least overstated, in that hundreds of thousands of immigrants have flooded in, and virtually all of them have been able to find housing. His view is that a large portion of the homeless are voluntarily so because of mental health issues (including drug-related), and so "More free housing!" won't help much.

That makes intuitive sense. Some people can't handle the hoops you have to jump through to obtain housing. Also, based on my personal experience with homeless people, I believe there are some people (not the majority by any means) who legitimately prefer being homeless.

I fully agree that the problem is complex - but the numbers we are seeing can't just be recalcitrants or mental health issues.
