There's nothing "soft" about it. Biden is overtly racist, and he has been for decades.

You brought up the Reagan/Nixon thing - but you haven't told us why what Biden said isn't racist. Um, yeah, that fits the definition.

And I don't even think CP's argument holds water!

Yeah, yeah - everyone that even looked at Thurmond...

What was presented in thread doesn't meet the smell test - unless we're using a certain left wing logic...

That's wrong, because my argument with respect to Nixon and Reagan did refute the charge here of racism against Biden. I didn't accuse the claimants with hypocrisy, I showed them the difference between Bidens' non racist inarticulate remark and the actual and blatant racist remarks of Nixon and Reagan. I'm sure they can see the difference, they just can't bring themselves to admit to it.

Really? So if someone said to you, "It sure is nice to see a black man who's clean, articulate, and smells nice," you wouldn't consider that racist?

No, because I don't define racist as 'has preconceptions about people of another race'. I define it as 'being significantly negatively prejudiced against people of another race'. Literally complimenting someone - even really stupidly - isn't a negative pre-judgement. I will grant, that in context, it quickly could be - but no, as is, it's patronizing and stupid, not racist.

But I'm in the minority that thinks the R word should only be used when it really applies.

I would say it's definitely rude. Racist? Eh.

Yup - which is why Jim CAN'T prove you wrong - too many posters around here have used it too loosely.

Which is sad, 'cause in reality, it's not racism to be stupid - or to have low expectations of others.

So, yeah, I willingly withdraw my statement about Joe being racist. I think it's more that he's ignorant.

On the other hand, I reassert my view that he *is* racist. I don't think it's a binary choice, but rather that there are degrees of racism. Having low expectations of blacks in general, but bearing no animus toward them, would qualify as "soft" racism. (However, I kind of get the impression that even a lot of blacks have low expectations of blacks, and I'm not sure how to label THAT.)
