The MSM loves a good scare story.

Just today I saw this scary headline:
Amazon fires: Record number burning in Brazil rainforest - space agency

The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) said its satellite data showed an 84% increase on the same period in 2018.

It comes weeks after President Jair Bolsonaro sacked the head of the agency amid rows over its deforestation data.

The largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is a vital carbon store that slows down the pace of global warming.

[then buried down inside the article we see...]
Meanwhile, US space agency Nasa said that overall fire activity in the Amazon basin was slightly below average this year.

And they can shove those recommendations - I PREFER it warmer but even I wouldn't set the thermostat that high during the day - or night!

I generally keep my thermostat at 74F (23C) during the day, but lower it down to about 69F (20C) at night. If I don't I can't sleep. Seems like I get hotter when I sleep. I will usually throw the covers off during the night.

Now if I have people over, I will usually turn down the day thermostat to about 72F - more bodies creates more heat.

        • I keep one room at 73 during the day - the bedroom, in case I get sick and need a nap (then I turn the AC to 77*). Other than that it's 74 during the day and 77 at night.

*I need it cool to go to sleep and warm to stay that way.

That one has been around longer than I have but dropped out of favor a couple decades ago since very few people use the product any more. Sort of like Geritol and all the jokes that use to surround it.

I keep it at 80° both during the day and night except when I leave and then turn it up to 84.

When did you start using your AC?

I usually hold out until it hits 90. But yeah, a few years back I didn't use it for two years in a row except for one day each year just to make sure it worked. I just got tired of waking up in a puddle of sweat even with a couple of fans blowing.

                  • In the winter, I keep the house at 68F during the day and about 62F at night.

In the summer the house is kept at 72F in the day and about 67F at night.

We use space heaters in the winter and dress warmly, and the house is pretty good at those temps in the summer.

How do you keep the igloo from melting at those temperatures?

60°F during the day and around 54-56 at night.

I used to turn it down to 52 but my pipes froze twice.

                          • I think in February this year I turned the furnace up to 69. February was really cold. Most days were -30C or colder, and worse at night.

I keep the thermostat fairly high but only because it saves money. Like when I took a college class recently, and I would print in-class assignments on the back of "used" paper. My instructor was impressed and asked, "Are you an environmentalist?" I said, "No, I'm a cheapskate. The only 'green' I care about saving is the green in my pocket!"

And when being a cheapskate serves an environmental purpose, so be it!
