What a thoughtful dog. Probably heard you complaining about cleaning the litter box and is helping you however he can.

In order to move away from that, this new eco-movement is concerned about a number of things including the use (or overuse) of water, poisons, fuel, and money to make lawns look maintained, and for the preservation of bees and butterflies, and the like. Instead, they suggest either growing wild flowers, or landscaping with rocks and flower or vegetable gardens.
Sounds like they want you to exchange mowing the lawn with gardening and landscaping, which is even more labor intensive and time consuming.

As a homeowner myself, I could support such a movement.

Depends on how you do it. A rock garden doesn't take much maintenance. And a wildflower lawn is just a bunch of weeds that you leave alone.

The specialists in Extension at Texas A&M love to point out that a 'flower' is simply a weed that we like.

Makes sense. I'm actually looking into "moss lawns," and "micro clover lawns" right now, and for some people who like the look of short green lawn, that may be the way to go. Probably depends on climate, tree shade, HOA and that sort of stuff though.

There's a part of my lawn where grass simply refuses to grow. When I was still having my lawn treated, it more or less stayed bare dirt. Weeds grow there fine, though.

Yeah, it's all about drought tolerance here in Texas - and full sun vs partial sun - I'll have to check what the ground cover is that they use at some of the buildings around here -- they never need mowed, and always seem nice and short and green.
