Deeper Waters Forum Guidelines

Notice The ministries featured in this section of TheologyWeb are guests of this site and in some cases not bargaining for the rough and tumble world of debate forums, though sometimes they are. Additionally, this area is frequented and highlighted for guests who also very often are not acclimated to debate fora. As such, the rules of conduct here will be more strict than in the general forum. This will be something within the discretion of the Moderators and the Ministry Representative, but we simply ask that you conduct yourselves in a manner considerate of the fact that these ministries are our invited guests. You can always feel free to start a related thread in general forum without such extra restrictions. Thank you.

Deeper Waters is founded on the belief that the Christian community has long been in the shallow end of Christianity while there are treasures of the deep waiting to be discovered. Too many in the shallow end are not prepared when they go out beyond those waters and are quickly devoured by sharks. We wish to aid Christians to equip them to navigate the deeper waters of the ocean of truth and come up with treasure in the end.

We also wish to give special aid to those often neglected, that is, the disabled community. This is especially so since our founders are both on the autism spectrum and have a special desire to reach those on that spectrum. While they are a special emphasis, we seek to help others with any disability realize that God can use them and that they are as the Psalmist says, fearfully and wonderfully made.

Part of my recovery from having grown up in fundamentalism was a friend saying, rather matter of factly, "rules without reason lead to rebellion".

For some reason, that really stuck with me, and I often thought about that when raising my own kids. I had grown up with "Because I said so, that's why!" and, sure enough, I rebelled, however briefly.

With my kids, I always tried to give the reason or rationale why a rule existed. And, sometimes, I really couldn't think of a good one.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I like having a reason behind a rule. A good rule has a good reason to follow it.

Alongside Nick's good piece, I'd encourage everyone to read David French's thoughts at National Review.

          https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/...a-lost-pastor/

He alludes to Harris' position representing a sort of transactional theological position: "If I don't date and only do xyz, then God will be happy with me and reward me."

            Great quote from that:

Maybe off topic, but my church's youth pastor preached the sermon one week on the Samaritan woman at the well and mentioned a church where the preacher sent a rose into the audience where all the petals got picked off and said no one would want it now. The rose symbolized puirity or something and my church's youth paster pointed out to us that Jesus still wants that rose. It's sick that there are legalists who would treat women like damaged goods.

I heard something similar in youth group 17 years ago, but with a rotten apple rather than a flower.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

The youth pastor heard it second hand and was upset at the sheer unChristlikeness of it. He was using the guy as a negative example. I have heard the tape analogy. Purity became almost an idol to some Christians. Or was it an actual idol?

A lot of legalists of this stripe are really just thinly veiled narcissistic misogynists. Essentially, they argue that if a woman isn't interested in their "specialness" and "devotion to Christ," then they must be adulterous whores who have rejected Jesus.

As you can no doubt tell, that line of thought disgusts me. (Note: I used quotes around "devotion to Christ" because I do not believe that these men are devoted Christians so much as they use Christianity to further their own aims)
