And then there's Marianne Williamson, who proposes a $200-500 billion reparations package, with the funds to be distributed over 20 years, as determined by a council of African-American leaders.
This plan is unlikely, to say the least. But it's powerful that Williamson is putting it out there, and staking out a leftward post on the reparations question. (Less impressive, and worth flagging for anyone who thinks Williamson's debate performance should make her a serious contender, is her long record of science denialism and hyper-individualism under the guise of spirituality and self-help).
I watched her speech on this - she got screams of joy from the audience, but this whole notion of "it's not reparations - it's a debt to be paid" is bonkers.
She'll probably not be the one I would identify as my Dem candidate of choice, if I'm wanting an alternative to Trump.

If you have ranked choices (say, top three), feel free to mention that as well.
This is purely for my own curiosity.
As far as being able to beat Trump, right now I guess I'd go with Biden based on the polls, but Biden concerns me a little. He seems a little feeble and his heart doesn't seem to really be in it. After that, as far as electability, I guess Bullock and Klobuchar could appeal to moderates and Independents.
As far as my ideal candidates, Warren has a lot of good proposals as does Buttigieg, but I don't think we're ready to elect a gay President.Last edited by Jim B.; 07-31-2019, 03:28 PM.

I like Gabbard on foreign policy."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! No skin in this particular game, but I'm hearing the progressive wing of the Democratic Party made a good showing, but I have little confidence that the party itself will allow them to go through.
Though to be honest, I think any Democratic candidate that gets confirmed should be voted for in favour of Trump by Democrats in the population. Much like the 'liberal' wing of my own country, purity seems to be much more important than actually winning, which is frankly bizarre.

I should note that this was the assessment of CNN political commentator Chris Cillizza who declared after being asked who were the winners and losers of the debate:
Donald Trump: An extended conversation about eliminating all private insurance. A top-tier candidate -- Warren -- fully embracing decriminalizing illegal immigration. All of that is music to the President's ears. Remember that his poll numbers -- job approval that has never broken 50%, etc. -- suggest that there is no positive message that wins Trump a second term. Which means he needs as much fodder as possible to cast Democrats as deeply out of touch and representative of a creeping socialism. He got plenty on Tuesday night.
I'm always still in trouble again
"You're by far the worst poster on TWeb" and "TWeb's biggest liar" --starlight (the guy who says Stalin was a right-winger)
"Overall I would rate the withdrawal from Afghanistan as by far the best thing Biden's done" --Starlight
"Of course, human life begins at fertilization that’s not the argument." --Tassman
