That goes for any weapon - if you're not ready for the fight, run or give up.

    • Situational awareness FTW! E/g/ If you notice some creep loitering in the parking lot, it would be best to go back in the store!

Not very. My training wasn't that intensive (really, it wasn't), and was 20 years ago. I'm in my mid-40s, so I suppose I'm still relatively younger than some of you old coots, but I guess it's all relative. I try to get to the gym a few times a week, but I'm not in what I would consider decent shape, and have dealt with a number of health issues since my late 30s which prohibit how much I can do. I am rather tall, so I suppose that's on point, but I wouldn't say that any of the rest would necessarily give me little to fear from most threats that are not a gun. I don't waste my days worrying about existential threats, because I trust in my Lord.

Wait... how successful would that be in real life?
If you have a gun in my face, close enough for me to reach it, and I believe you're going to shoot me anyway, it's worth the risk to at least try to deflect your aim, then grab the gun.

I have heard people sometimes do get their gun taken and used on them. Which is why one should not have a gun for self defense if you aren't fully committed to using the thing!
Even police officers get their guns taken from them. If an officer is arresting a guy, and deadly force is not warranted, he probably won't have his gun out, but in the struggle, if the perp sees an opportunity not to go back to jail, he's not beyond grabbing the officer's gun and using it on the officer.

Next question, why am I okay with the idea of clobbering a hostile target with a heavy object in self defense, but not anything that would leave a puddle of blood?
It's amazing what people will do - or not do - in the actual circumstance. That's why police and fire and military train so much. We can always say "if X happens, I'm gonna do Y", but unless it's ingrained in you, you really don't know how you'd respond.

          • I'd rather avoid getting in any situation where I'd need to go for a evil creep's throat or eyes. But the clump of ill intent would know a potential victim would go for those areas.... Situational awareness and safety in numbers it is then! Except I don't have the best vision or hearing.... Do we need a self defense thread?

I used to teach self-defense, particularly to our women, when I worked for the gas compression company. They always seemed keenly interested and grateful for the information.

              Two quick points...

              A) I'm always amazed when I see (particularly) girls walking out of a store at night staring at their phones as they walk... not only have they abandoned situational awareness, they have also destroyed their night vision.
              2) Particularly in the winter, when it gets dark early, always look at where the parking lot lights are when you park -- when you come out, it could well be dark, and you don't want to go to a dark car.

              • Looking at a phone seems likely to increase the chance of getting hit by a car also.

At a company I used to work for I escorted more than one female employee to their car after it got dark

And that didn't make them more afraid?

                        • Well, I can't drive, so I am usually not alone. But, when I was taking classes for my Master's, I would walk back to my apartment. One class was over after dark. When it was light, I could take a shortcut to reach the place I lived, but after dark, I would stay on the main road sidewalk and not use the back way. There likely weren't any evildoers hiding in the dark, but I didn't want to take that risk.

This was a bit over a couple days ago when such things were pretty common as were interoffice romances and the like.

Coworkers would date? Sounds like a bad idea....
