Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

  • Substance Abuse: Sin Or Disease?

I was listening to a local Bishop recently, he was saying that substance abuse was a disease not a sin. But scripture clearly defines drunkenness as a sin (the main substance abuse of the time). I get why some do not want to put this in moral terms since they fear that the resulting guilt may prevent recovery, but a Bishop (or Christian) should know better.

I think it can be both.

Addiction is a disease, but not all substance abuse is addiction. And even with most addictions, there is a time before you are actually addicted where you are making a conscious decision to give in to the addiction or avoid it. Nobody makes you take that first hit of heroin but yourself.

Who says it is mutually exclusive? The poor choices that lead to addiction is the sin. The physiological/psychological need to keep abusing the drug is the disease part. But it is still the person's choice to seek help.
If it weren't for the Resurrection of Jesus, we'd all be in DEEP TROUBLE!

Exactly that is a moral choice that will eventually lead to addiction. Which makes it a sin.

I do think sometimes something that is not a sin in itself can sneak up on someone to become substance abuse. Like drinking. If someone has an addictive personality, drinking could start out as a normal social behavior, having a brew with your friends, but slowly turn into an addiction till one day the person is locked into the addiction and can't get out. In such cases I don't know if it is a sin or not. They are abusing the substance but they didn't start abusing it on purpose and they ended up where they are because of their genetics or whatever caused them to become addicted where others would not be.

They still need to recognize they have a problem and stop, but I don't know where the sin begins. Maybe they know they need help but refuse because they like the substance?

I think he's wrong. Addictions and compulsive behaviors (such as seeking out pornography) do not simply begin on their own. It takes a willful act of sin to get that ball rolling. Yes, people can get to the point where they may not be able to control themselves, but they bear full responsibility for the sin that got them there.

Drunkenness and gluttony are both sins in Scripture, yet Jesus said those who are whole do not need a physician, but those who are sick (Luke 5:31). So indeed, it does seem to be both.

Probably with human eyes we can't see when this occurs. I think it's when their substance becomes their god.
