This one brings me to another worry/concern (?):

"That week, she happened to hear three different pastors preach about the Good Samaritan, which she accepted as a pretty definitive sign that the idea really was from God."

I grew up being taught that this is a dangerous thing to do. That is, to sort of randomly "see" the answer when it might not be. You know what I mean? How do I distinguish this from personal desires?
This sounds like the old "Is it an answer to prayer, or is it a coincidence?" question. As my mom once said, God doesn't deal in coincidences.

But anyway, my friend's story is a little more complicated than what I've described here. It wasn't even necessarily an idea she wanted to pursue, and she would have been perfectly content with not doing it, but the idea was there, so prayed and asked God for confirmation.

I have developed the habit - when I wonder if what I'm "seeing" from God is really from Him - or praying, "OK, Lord, you know what a blockhead I can be, and how I can convince myself that something is from you if it's something I want -- so I'm asking you to make it really REALLY clear....."

    He has, numerous times!

The lady had been on a diet for weeks, and was doing good, but she was passing the donut shop on her way to the drug store. She REALLY wanted a donut. So she prayed. "Lord, if you want me to have a donut, then let there be a parking space right at the front door - that will be the sign".

Sure enough, after only SEVEN trips driving around the block, there was a parking spot open right at the front door!

I usually find myself knowing it's God when it is something I DON'T want to do, but I know I should. My conscience won't let me be. And Romans 2 talks about that, how God uses our conscience to let us know right from wrong.

If it is something I want to do, I usually figure it is just me wanting it, and then I will see if it is aligned with biblical teachings. If it is, then I do it.

....If not, then I do the drive around the block 7 times thing.

I have a fairly severe form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which manifests itself in the form of religious scrupulosity. I actually mostly have it under control for the last few years thanks to help from a good Christian therapist but I used to struggle with being convinced God was telling me to do something completely unreasonable (like turning myself into the police for copying a CD for a friend back in high school, getting rid of all my clothes except for plain shirts, or giving all my money to the poor and becoming homeless). That's why I don't know if I can apply the normal tests of discernment to myself in light of that knowledge.

Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Well, yeah, there's that... but I'm pretty sure we're well aware of times we're trying to rig things in our favor and that it's really not the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

"Dear Lord, if I'm not supposed to eat this entire chocolate cake, then let it turn to sawdust in my mouth!"

Yes, we're only really giving general advice here that may not necessarily be applicable to everybody.

That was the purpose of the joke.

A more fitting situation, in my own life, has been where I was a pastor of a Church that seemed determined to get rid of me. Not "the people", but the leadership. I didn't know that it was worth fighting for, or just leave. In the back of my mind, I felt like God had a purpose for me being there, and I just needed to survive the initial "cold war".

As I was praying about this, God gave me the wisdom to pray "God, either change them or move them - or change me or move me".

God changed them in rather drastic ways - 1 woman died of a heart attack, her husband got a very aggressive form of cancer, another man had a severe liver failure, and yet another woman (the church gossip) was voted out of the Church at the prompting of her best friend.

We had 1 year of nuclear war, followed by two years of cold war, then the Holy Spirit was allowed to work and we had 7 years of unity, growth, and incredible blessings.

That's where it's really wise to have good godly friends you trust, and seek their counsel.

There's that expression "how can I know what I think until I hear myself say it" --- and often, just in describing a problem to a trusted friend, I stop mid-story, realizing either how silly the problem is, or how simple the solution is. Other times, the friends I trust provide the wisdom.

Above all, however, if anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask God!

Thanks everyone for all the info. I think some of you surmised that I was trying to decide something. After much prayer, I ended up going for it last night. I didn't really want to do it and it wasn't unbiblical either. I guess now it's just waiting to see if I made the right or wrong decision!
