Christianity 201 Guidelines
orthodox Christians only.
Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?
This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.
Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.
The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

I readily grant that there are parts of the Bible that are hard to understand, but the general message at least should always be clear. And the particularly difficult passages (like Ezekiel's bizarre visions) aren't going to be the subjects of very many sermons. There's no reason any adult without a learning disability shouldn't be able to handle reading one of the gospels.
(Though I wonder if the lady who said she couldn't handle the Bible tried reading a King James Version or Young's Literal Translation or something. That would actually make sense.)"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

But I also find Christian inspirational books to be boring -- at least what I've picked up.
When I wrote the OP, I was thinking of authors I read like CS Lewis, AW Tozer, or that book of Spurgeon sermons I've been wanting to read."For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings." Hosea 6:6

I certainly wouldn't be satisfied with such a church. Then again, I'm dissatisfied with Protestant churches in general, so the difference in this case is merely one of degree. I don't think anyone would be satisfied with that level of Christianity for long; either they're going to drift away from the faith entirely or leave for something more substantial."For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings." I've never read Tozer but I read JP Holding's scathing critique, which has been enough to keep me away."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. If you're looking for the perfect church, and you find it - don't join it, cause you'll ruin it.The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

Just a comment - I don't know the situation so I'm not commenting on it specifically but the general idea - if there's something wrong with our church, we are either part of the problem or should be part of the solution. Just meaning, the door shouldn't be our first recourse when things get tough."He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." - Jim Elliot

So, you could try talking to those in leadership of such churches, but you might try seeing if you can put together a Bible study or something for those who are unwilling to leave but still want deeper content.Curiosity never hurt anyone. It was stupidity that killed the cat.

At this point in time I am more concerned with faithfulness to scripture than how "deep" things are. I left my church of 26 years after they made the switch to affirmation of homosexuality. Given that Scripture portrays this as a salvation issue, it's not something I can agree to disagree with.
The church we have been attending here is one I could not join because they have a super specific list of things you have to believe to join (one of which is Calvinism, which I don't hold to) but that's not a deal breaker for me. I mean, if I can't be a formal member, whatever. I actually find the teachings to be very useful and edifying."I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right!
