Charles, it used to be that, even in major cities, there were one or two newspapers from which to choose, and maybe three channels on TV - ABC, NBC and CBS.

Now, any "citizen journalist" (or kook) can put a fancy looking website and appear to be "official".

If you don't think the news outlets are in it for the money, you, sir, are pretty naive.

    • Charles is correct that most reputable (i.e. not one or two people claiming to be citizen journalists) do not intentionally run false headlines. Catchy headlines, yes. Outright false? Generally not, though you can find examples here and there. I get my news from news aggregators and have a pretty good feel for what is common among the legitimate sorts.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

I'll buy that! The problem is that many (most) consumers don't bother to discern (or know) which are the reputable ones. Hence, the battle of the headlines for attention.

        • So, all in all, I see that the best "defence" of Breitbart is some sort of appeal to common practice. Everyone else is doing it, so...

I don't see you pushing for higher standards. I think I see the opposite.

I'm not defending Breitbart at all. I don't read or follow Breitbart - at least, not on purpose.

Perhaps that's due to your own bias, Charles, so lemme remedy that real quick!!!

Having expressed a concern about the problem, I hereby, absent duress or threat of life, do willingly and emphatically declare that ALL news sources should be more circumspect in the choosing of their headlines, but more importantly, HONEST and unbiased in their reporting of the news.

            Anything else?

I am referring, of course, to the many liberal sources I regularly come across.

Not only that, nobody even mentioned Breitbart until Chuck brought it up.

No. I just wonder why it took so long for you to make that statement.

If you only find problems in "liberal" sources, your reading must be rather biased.

                      Right, that's the only explanation.

Well, if you hadn't falsely ASSUMED I was defending Breitbart, or had actually ASKED that question....

In the future, don't be so assuming.

Your own bias caused you to assume something that was simply not true.

And I still stand by the fact that nobody has yet to show a Breitbart article I've cited to be in error. The complaint is not "The facts are wrong!" but "I don't like how the facts are presented!"

If you are arguing that MSNBC and CNN aren't reputable who am I to disagree?
