  • The Fellowship (The Family)

I'm watching this Netflix documentary "The Family." It is about a very powerful, secret Christian fellowship based in the DC area. This is the first time I have heard of them, and I'm not sure what to think.

Interesting. My immediate concern was "why secret?" but they address that.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

In only two episodes in (there are five) and so far Netflix is pretty fair. But the connections are far reaching and across party line.

For them to confess lust of power to peers, then continue doing same powergrubbing next day?

It's allegedly a conservative Christian group, but the views mentioned mostly don't seem very conservative.

Well as far as things like abortion and gay marriage they are quite conservative.

                  From the Wikipedia article:

He opines that their theological teaching of instant forgiveness has been useful to powerful men, providing them a convenient excuse for misdeeds or crimes and allowing them to avoid accepting responsibility or accountability for their actions.[
I'd like to know what Sharlet means by that. The idea of Christians being able to be forgiven immediately upon repentance seems unobjectionable based on 1 John 1:9. In context, is he implying that they believe there are no further consequences for sin once you've asked for forgiveness, like that you don't need to try to right the wrongs you created?
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Kinda like regularly being in a drunken brawl on Friday night, then going to Saturday morning confession, and all is well?

Right in the two cases of infidelity that were mentioned in the series it was all about stopping the behavior getting the family reconciled.

Key word: regularly. That means there's been no repentance.

I guess Mrs CP and I will give this a look.

Our experience with previous Netflix series is that they tend to start out "decent", then get progressively worse. We were really blown away when "designated survivor" suddenly devolved into a "F-word" context in the (3rd? 4th?) season, and we could no longer watch it.

I actually added that word in after I posted.

That was my experience when I was a cop - the Catholic Church just up the street from the PD would REGULARLY have "game nights" or such at their facility on Friday nights, drunken brawls would break out, then they'd have a good crowd for Saturday morning confession (so I was told by one of their serial combatants).
