OBP - I will not concede that it is possible to call another person a hypocrite without first condemning oneself, especially in this setting.

The difference between saying 'you are a hypocrite' and saying 'an action is hypocritical', as I see it, is that the former passes judgement on who the person IS, wheras the latter simply notes the action was hypocritical and acknowledges the person themselves may be unintentional about the action and maybe even wants not to act hypocritically as much as is possible.

It also leaves open the possibility of debate about the action itself without the baggage of judgment of the person.

The infrastructure in PR was in such poor shape, and the government so corrupt, that the only way Trump could have accomplished what you're asking is if he declared martial law and spent billions rebuilding the country literally from the ground up. This course of action is neither practical, desirable, nor feasible.

          Interesting:

Desmond begins his article by drawing on the Harvard historian Sven Beckert who argues that “it was on the back of cotton, and thus on the backs of slaves, that the U.S. economy ascended in the world.” Yet Desmond neglects to mention that this claim has been widely rejected by specialists in the economic history of slavery.

It’s true that cotton was among the world’s most widely traded commodities, and that it was America’s principal antebellum export. But it’s also true that exports constituted a small share of American GDP (typically less than 10 percent) and that the total value of cotton was therefore small by comparison with the overall American economy (less than 5 percent, lower than the value of corn).

          • I think it is ironic that they are complaining about capitalism having enslaved some people, when most of these liberals are promoting socialism, which enslaves everyone.

            • Had missed Jamil Smith's perspective commentary in "Rolling Stone" last week; adding it to the record.

Knowing the truth about black history because I read books, I always wondered as a boy: Why, if you love America so dearly, would you not be willing to look at it in the face? There is a James Baldwin quote that I have had tattooed on my consciousness: “I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” That is the animating spirit of endeavors like the 1619 Project, which — if people bothered to read it — shows it is possible to depict our ugliness through beauty, to artfully weave a reader’s eyes and mind through a re-examination of the very soil beneath their feet so that they see it anew, and more clearly. It is a vision test for the soul, and it certainly helps us not only view America in greater relief, but those working to inhibit its growth and empowerment.

Accountability through honesty is not merely a journalistic endeavor, but a patriotic one.

I have always believed we should never be afraid of the truth. The problemvin this case, as I see it, is that there is a certain much kinder version of history many regard almost as sacred, and so all attempts to clarify or bring to light that which was left out or covered over are seen necessarily as attacks on the nation, on the sacred mythology of its origin.

What was left out Jim? Who didn't know about slavery, Jim Crow, lynchings, segregation, and general racism? Nothing has been hidden or covered over.

It's like people think that if we don't focus on the negatives in American history that we're ignoring them. I like what Morgan Freeman once said, that one of the ways to combat today's racism is to simply stop talking about it.

No, its when people like you go ballistic and start claiming there's some conspiracy to undermine America over attempts to correct or expand on issues typically glossed over that it looks like you are trying to ignore them.

I think it naive to believe we've reached the point nationally were that would be a reasonable response. The ignorance displayed on this website alone regarding historical racial language ( they should go back where they came from, monkey)
and the history of racism in this country shows we definately still have much that needs to be discussed.

Well I certainly that believe the left hates America. The original sin of slavery can never be forgiven, no matter what we do.

I would think America was so much more than slavery and that you would not have to hate America because you cannot forgive slavery. Was I wrong, seer?

Unfortunately your president has made it necessary to talk about it again.
