I played an early version of Civilization and in quick order had a massive empire.

You were supposed to pick two things that your tribe or whatever started out with. While most seemed to pick things like writing and agriculture I took taming horses and metallurgy. My people with their cavalry and metal weapons then simply moved in on those with writing, agriculture and the like and took them over thus gaining them.

Ooh, I'm going to have to try my hand at that one. I just have to figure out how to port it to my Win3.11 box. I think I have a spare floppy drive laying about.

I think the longest game I've played was 7th Fleet. I stayed up all night playing that.

I played Star Fleet Battles, Original Edition, once. Set up: three HOURS. Play time: fifteen minutes.

But that was because it was my first (and only) game. The guys that played regularly could go all night easily - and, if memory serves, once played for nearly forty-eight hours. Game was called on account of college.

I've beaten most of the gold box games. I took (mostly) the same set of characters from first level (in Pool of Radiance) through Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades and Pools of Darkness, finishing Dave's Challenge at the end of the last with most characters at 40th level in at least one class (did a lot of dual-class characters). The first game didn't have Paladins or Rangers, so I swapped in a couple of those at the start of the second game.
