But to spread division and racial hate. It fits right in with the whole white privilege meme, and the labeling of Trump as a racist and by extension his followers (as we know from the leaked NT Times meeting). The Project claimed that 1619 was when slavery came to America, of course that was not true, the Natives practiced slavery long before the white man came here. It is also true that it was blacks that kidnapped and sold other blacks to the white slavers in Africa (in other words slavery was quite common and accepted). And BTW - Africa where slavery is still practiced today, and is growing. And nothing I have read so far in the 1619 project (besides personal stories) is new - we have all known the history for years. Since we know this history, and have, what is the point of this national push - division? Reparations? Naked political correctness?

Actually been thinking a lot about this in the past couple days and planning to put it into a post on the original 1619 thread.

Why do we need three separate threads on it?
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

Two - the OP made a closure request on the second thread.

The two remaining - one is about the essay content; the other about the project motive.

The intent is pretty obvious: It's to promote the long-held liberal notion that America is an inherently racist nation, and that our success is undeserved. Of course the fact that this series is hitting at a time when the left is going to great lengths to declare Trump the most racist president in US history is just a coincidence.

By far and away the most racist president was Woodrow Wilson with the second being LBJ -- both of whom just happened to be Democrats.

I'm always still in trouble again

Yeah, but today they'd be considered Republicans. At least according to liberal logic.

And slavery did not define us then or now, and even at the height of cotton production in that era it was only 3% of our economy. So it did not build America, economically it was no more than a footnote. We know what this is all about - Trump is a racist and we need more white guilt...

Why They Keep Trying to Blame Capitalists for Slavery

In recent months, several national media outlets and public figures have begun pushing the idea that modern capitalism is built on the foundation of slavery. Last week, while linking to a New Your Times article on the topic, Bernie Sanders claimed "America’s rise relied on treating Black people as literal property. "Meanwhile, a recent Vox headline proclaims "How slavery became the building block of the American economy."

Conveniently, this narrative is perfect for doing two things at once. It sets up capitalism as the moral heir of slavery. And at the same time, it pushes the idea that those who lead a relatively comfortable life under the capitalist system are benefiting from the toil of slaves from long ago. By this thinking, if every modern day business owner, entrepreneur, and middle-class property owner has benefited from capitalism, then that person — whether or not his ancestors were in any way connected to the slave economy — has also benefited from slavery. If the strategy succeeds, then modern day capitalists can be shown to be, in a sense, on the same moral plane as the slave masters of old. And, of course, capitalism is also shown to be morally repugnant.

Fortunately, the evidence doesn't support the theory. The slave economy was never the engine of American economic growth, and capitalist systems never needed slavery to succeed.

                            continues at:

That's not a good argument - cotton wasn't the reason for slavery in the US initially - tobacco was. And tobacco was the center of the early colonial economy.

No, slavery didn't define the US - but it wasn't an economic footnote either.

Just thank God the contiguous US doesn't have much land good for sugar cane - where slavery really did define and destroy nations.
