An interesting article, I too found it difficult to find objective information on what was happening.

Michael Shellenberger, who Time magazine declared a Hero of the Environment in 2008, has written a scathing article in Forbes excoriating some of the claims made about the fires in the Amazon and explicitly targeting some of the celebutards who have jumped into the fray.

fires in Brazil have increased, there is no evidence that Amazon forest fires have.

In reference to the "it's a wash" quote.

lets get a bit real here. Tree's are made of wood. a lot of what makes wood wood is carbon. That carbon stays put, and most of it comes from CO2 broken down by photosynthesis. Conservatively then, a tree produces about half its weight in oxygen over it's lifetime. It's far from a wash

Burning the tree, OTOH, partially reduces that. By recombining a good hit of the sequestored carbon and hydrogen producing water vapor, co2 and co.

So burning a forest takes away from carbon sequestration and oxygen production - both necesarry elements to combat the excess co2 we are producing.

Most of the o2, however, comes from phytoplankton in the oceans, and they are threatened by warming and acidification of the oceans.

My brethren, do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism. James 2:1

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not  bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man’s religion is worthless James 1:26

This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; James 1:19
