Deeper Waters Forum Guidelines
Notice – The ministries featured in this section of TheologyWeb are guests of this site and in some cases not bargaining for the rough and tumble world of debate forums, though sometimes they are. Additionally, this area is frequented and highlighted for guests who also very often are not acclimated to debate fora. As such, the rules of conduct here will be more strict than in the general forum. This will be something within the discretion of the Moderators and the Ministry Representative, but we simply ask that you conduct yourselves in a manner considerate of the fact that these ministries are our invited guests. You can always feel free to start a related thread in general forum without such extra restrictions. Thank you.
Deeper Waters is founded on the belief that the Christian community has long been in the shallow end of Christianity while there are treasures of the deep waiting to be discovered. Too many in the shallow end are not prepared when they go out beyond those waters and are quickly devoured by sharks. We wish to aid Christians to equip them to navigate the deeper waters of the ocean of truth and come up with treasure in the end.
We also wish to give special aid to those often neglected, that is, the disabled community. This is especially so since our founders are both on the autism spectrum and have a special desire to reach those on that spectrum. While they are a special emphasis, we seek to help others with any disability realize that God can use them and that they are as the Psalmist says, fearfully and wonderfully made.

It's silly, and I don't think it's necessarily wrong to play these games, but I do think it plants an ear worm in certain people's minds. It's part of an overall agenda, in my opinion, to slowly hammer away at the Christian worldview.

Originally posted by Adrift View PostHmm. So, I haven't played every title in the series, but let's take Assassin's Creed for example. That's a game that pits a protagonist group, the Assassin Brotherhood, against a secret cabal from the Templar Order. The premise slowly unfolds that both factions are fighting for an ancient alien technology that premodern societies either found to be holy or magic. The character controlled by the player is sent into a number of simulations using his/her genetic memory in order to reveal certain secrets about the whereabouts of these relics, and in so doing uncovers the "real" history behind the history we currently take for granted, or consider mythological. As the games develop we learn things like, Jesus is not divine, rather he's simply a fraud who at various times possessed some of this ancient technology that made him seem like he was divine. And this is true for other Biblical miracle workers as well. It's then suggested that parts of the Church have known this throughout the ages and have sought to cover it up. In the meantime, the Assassin Brotherhood, part of an Islamic sect are attempting to thwart the various machinations of The Templars.

In the case of things like assassins creed I see it as not only being inferior to other games mechanics wise with Metal Gear trumping it as a stealth game.
I like stories about aliens or alternate realities, but you still need an explanation of how those things came into being.
If anything it is my interest in history that makes assassins creed as a series so unintentionally hilarious at how it treats speculative historical fiction.sigpic

I figure that if you want to help those that may be influenced by such stories sit them down and show them the truth. Lee Strobel has a book on The Divinci Code.
I must admit I have a pretty strong grasp on what is real and what is not. Can I be misinformed well of course. It is because people lie and spread misinformation that I believe we are called to learn the truthsigpic

I do have to say KG I admire that you are concerned. I am too. I think these kind of things could be used as a learning opportunity in the sense of Here is truth and here is non truth.
The truth is mocking christianity in media is somewhat common. Look at Preacher for instance. I find such stories poorly written and driven primarily by shock value and feelings of catharsis. I dont like these stories, but I can still learn from them even if it is only what is not true.
Still for those who have little faith or are young in their faith I would advise building them up so that when they do confront something like that they can handle it.
I suppose part of my attitude about this comes from how I came to faith and grew in faith. Everyone is different after all and I dont want to cause people to stumble.sigpic

With what Adrift said, the book wasn't written by Christians afaik and the only point to address is violence. It is not addressing other points. For what he said, Final Fantasy came to my mind first. I love the series, but every time the church shows up, it's evil. Perhaps we could learn something about how the Japanese view us and what we can do about that. Yes. I have a problem with that kind of mindset, but the way to do better I think is to have Christians in the video game industry and not just making cheesy Jesus games that only fellow Christians will play. Make fun games that non-Christians will want to play, like any other media.

I agree though just slapping jesus on stuff is lazy. Narnia is brilliant. Lord of the rings is brilliant. I want more things like that.
I want to see well made things. I want to see goodness in different art forms.sigpic

And again, it's not about the details. Most people will recognize that Assassin's Creed is fiction/fantasy, but it's part of this overall theme of "don't trust religion," and the divine is something that science can explain away, or that science trumps the supernatural.
But, getting into the details of that series, people have seriously suggested that alien technology (or aliens themselves) can explain away the supernatural. Look no further than the Ancient Astronaut theory. And the fact that an Islamic sect is the hero of the game, and that the game takes a hands-off approach to Muhammad, while feeling free to tinker with Jesus and Moses, well...that's a bit telling as well. But these things aren't my main concern. My main concern is this use of popular fiction to subtly and perhaps subconsciously get people to view Christianity with suspicion. And games like Assassin's Creed, and Tomb Raider, and shows like Preacher, The Boys and The Handmaid's Tale, and books like The Da Vinci Code and A Series of Unfortunate Events, and all sorts of other popular media are part of that tapestry driving a message home. Religion (specifically Christianity) can't be trusted/is untrue, and God is evil or an old-fashioned myth.Last edited by Adrift; 09-26-2019, 08:07 AM.

And ultimately the subtext behind a game like Assassin's Creed is that the church (here often represented by the Catholic Church, but which is used as a stand-in for the church at large) cannot be trusted. It's made up of scheming liars and fools who have for ages attempted to mislead the ignorant. This has the ring of truth for a lot of people today. It's not just this game, but Assassin's Creed is part of a larger tapestry of post-modern anti-Christian sentiment that aims to slowly hammer it away.
