Is the implication here that Michelle Obama's wild popularity (that poll shows ~46% of "Lean-R" NH primary voters would vote for Obama were she to enter the race, along with ~22% of conservative voters) is a ... negative for Democrats?

Michelle Obama won't run and all top three Democratic candidates are beating Trump in head-to-head polling right now. So who Michelle Obama ends up stumping for is going to have the advantage of a very popular supporter with universal name recognition.

      Trump would be so lucky.

Three months out from the primaries having anyone that can lead your field without running is a very bad sign.

In New Hampshire, where Biden & Sanders were beating Trump by +5 to +10 in September, I'd be a lot more concerned about the 14% potential Weld supporters crossing over.

It's not unusual for someone to be popular in the polls until they start campaigning, and then things turn around in a hurry.

But I do hope the Democrats are desperate and stupid enough to pull something like this.

Depends on which poll you're looking at. I saw one recently showing Trump easily beating the Democrats in key states.

But like I keep saying, the only poll that matters is the one that happens on election day.

Oh sure - and this is just funny - but it isn't a good sign this close to primaries.

Why is this surprising? First Ladies are generally popular as they tend to mostly stay out of the political fray, and occasionally lobby on "safe" issues (Laura Bush on education, Michelle Obama on children's nutrition, Melania Trump on human rights). Also, anybody who isn't currently runing has the advantage of not having been pummeled by all sides in the open battle that is the primary process and hasn't had to answer tough questions. If she actually ran and got involved with the process, her rating would surely drop. Maybe she would be the frontrunner for all I know, but she surely wouldn't run away with it.

It isn't surprising - if he were still alive Grumpy Cat could out poll that field.

It is funny, though - and getting pretty late to still see this.

In a perfect world, media coverage would not pre-determine who the frontrunners are going to be and each candidate could make their case. There seem to be two candidates who actually have good ideas and could ideally rise to the top (I'm thinking Andrew Yang and Tulsi Gabbard).

Ironically, it was the media that helped propel Trump to front-runner status during the Republican primary because they thought Hillary would make short work of him. They've been regretting that decision ever since.

They would have been much better off with a creampuff Republican like Jeb or Kasich who would have been happy to take it on the chin and lose with grace.

I agree with the first part but I'm no fan of Yang or Gabbard.
