That was back when the Democrats were the "God and Country" party, Jim. Back when guys like my Dad were proud Democrats. Also, there were fewer and fewer conservative Democrats into the 80's and 90's. Interestingly enough, another factor was that there were a lot of conservatives "immigrating"* from other states to Texas. (the oil boom)
