Christianity 201 Guidelines

orthodox Christians only.

Discussion on matters of general mainstream evangelical Christian theology that do not fit within Theology 201. Have some spiritual gifts ceased today? Is the KJV the only viable translation for the church today? In what sense are the books of the bible inspired and what are those books? Church government? Modern day prophets and apostles?

This forum is primarily for Christians to discuss matters of Christian doctrine, and is not the area for debate between atheists (or those opposing orthodox Christianity) and Christians. Inquiring atheists (or sincere seekers/doubters/unorthodox) seeking only Christian participation and having demonstrated a manner that does not seek to undermine the orthodox Christian faith of others are also welcome, but must seek Moderator permission first. When defining “Christian” or "orthodox" for purposes of this section, we mean persons holding to the core essentials of the historic Christian faith such as the Trinity, the Creatorship of God, the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection of Christ, the atonement, the future bodily return of Christ, the future bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust, and the final judgment. Persons not holding to these core doctrines are welcome to participate in the Comparative Religions section without restriction, in Theology 201 as regards to the nature of God and salvation with limited restrictions, and in Christology for issues surrounding the person of Christ and the Trinity. Atheists are welcome to discuss and debate these issues in the Apologetics 301 forum without such restrictions.

Additionally and rarely, there may be some topics or lines of discussion that within the Moderator's discretion fall so outside the bounds of mainstream orthodox doctrine (in general Christian circles or in the TheologyWeb community) or that deny certain core values that are the Christian convictions of forum leadership that may be more appropriately placed within Unorthodox Theology 201. NO personal offense should be taken by such discretionary decision for none is intended. While inerrancy is NOT considered a requirement for posting in this section, a general respect for the Bible text and a respect for the inerrantist position of others is requested.

The Tweb rules apply here like they do everywhere at Tweb, if you haven't read them, now would be a good time.

A few months ago, there were reports that Kanye West had decided to become a Christian. A lot of people were skeptical. I'll admit I was skeptical, too.

But seeing this article this morning (warning: this is a secular music magazine; there is no profanity in the article, but I can't speak as to any ads or links that might be elsewhere on the site) changed my mind. Naturally, the media is focusing on the fact that he went around asking people working on his new album "Jesus is King" not to engage in premarital sex during the process. But this excerpt caught my attention instead:

"Now that I’m in service to Christ, my job is to spread the gospel, to let people know what Jesus has done for me. I’ve spread a lot of things. There was a time I was letting you know what high fashion had done for me, I was letting you know what the Hennessey had done for me, but now I’m letting you know what Jesus has done for me, and in that I’m no longer a slave, I’m a son now, a son of God. I’m free.
These sound like the words of someone who really has decided to follow Jesus. Pray that he stays on the right track. There are temptations for anyone who decides to follow Jesus; his are more high profile than those of most.
"I am not angered that the Moral Majority boys campaign against abortion. I am angry when the same men who say, "Save OUR children" bellow "Build more and bigger bombers." That's right! Blast the children in other nations into eternity, or limbless misery as they lay crippled from "OUR" bombers! This does not jell." - Leonard Ravenhill

I just get a little nervous when somebody so seemingly emotionally unstable steps up to be a spokesmen for the Risen Lord. But, God can fix that, too.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

I think it would also take a good therapist acting as God's instrument..... I'm not being blasphemous, I just think someone like that needs therapy.

He snapped my daughter out of depression, drugs, bad attitude.... without a therapist, so I know He can do it.

Kanye's flirted with religious themes for a while, including releasing an album named "Yeezus" in 2013. Titles on that album include "Black Skinhead", "I Am A God", "Hold My Liquor". If you're not offended by explicit lyrics, google the lyrics to "I Am A God".

Anyways, I'm not holding my breath. The dude's crazy.

Then you will find yourself in the situation where faith becomes possible and where faith exists in the true sense of the word." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

I'm still not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing. On one hand, dude has a whole lot of influence in a very dark and lost entertainment culture. On the other hand, as a futurist, I tend to lean towards it being a bad thing, like this may be the beginning of a counterfeit Christianity.

Um, counterfeit Christianity has been around for oh, about 2000 years, my fellow futurist. Nothing new about that.

I am going to reserve thoughts on Kanye until there is or isn't more evidence of a genuine conversion.

Yes, as with my own daughter's miraculous turnaround - time will tell. So far, she's a changed woman!

If your theology causes you to view somebody professing Christ as a bad thing, then you need to change your theology.

But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
