That is very sad for the people in Venezuela. My thoughts are with them. It must be very hard on them. Apparently they are now using other currencies for most transactions as a substitute.

Venezuela's economy = train wreck. Not to a good thing, especially given how the volume of natural resources they have. It's gonna be a wild ride.

No one wants to know about your faith or unbelief, your orders are to perform the act of obedience on the spot. Then you will find yourself in the situation where faith becomes possible and where faith exists in the true sense of the word." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Their economy has never been well-balanced, because they have more extractable-resources (like petroleum) than they need, but don't have good terrain for crop growing etc. So they have always depended on exporting mined resources and importing food and other goods. At their most recent peak (2017) they were exporting about $28B US in goods and importing $9B in goods per year.

The US had been their top trading partner with regard to both exports and imports, and so the recent US policy changes toward shutting down trade with Venezuela due to an ideological dislike of their government have pretty much crippled the country.

So blame the US! It goes much deeper and you know it Star...

In 2018, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) documented that "information gathered indicates that the socioeconomic crisis had been unfolding for several years" before international sanctions,[22] with Michelle Bachelet saying in 2019 that the social and economic crisis was dramatically deteriorating, the government had not acknowledged or addressed the extent of the crisis, and she expressed concern that although the "pervasive and devastating economic and social crisis began before the imposition of the first economic sanctions", the sanctions could worsen the situation.[23][24] National and international analysts and economists have stated that the crisis is not the result of a conflict, natural disaster or sanctions but the consequences of populist policies and corrupt practices that began under the Chávez administration's Bolivarian Revolution and continued under the Maduro administration.

And the fact that there were international sanctions, not just the US.

They are reaping the fruits of socialism and a government controlled economy.

Considering the sudden infatuation with socialism by our youth it would be really useful if there were some historic and present day examples of just how much a failure that system is when it has been implemented.

IIRC back in the 50s Venezuela was among the top ten richest countries in the world. It sure didn't take long for Chavez and Maduro to turn the country into an economic basket case.

My prayers for the poor people forced to endure this.
