It definitely IS a fair question, but it's predicated upon moral relativism.

The Soviets had its gulags (which a couple of Sander's campaign officials spoke wistfully of and wanted to instate in the U.S.) and the Chicoms still use slave labor. And several Muslim countries still have issues with slavery.

Slavery still widespread. It's called "child trafficking." I'm not sure why the reality of child trafficking gets virtually ignored in comparison to the myth of "systemic racism."

The closest thing they had was serfdom, but while the lives of serfs were controlled by the local lords and they were often considered to belong to an estate, they could own property and weren't treated as possessions and sold as goods. While slavery existed in Britain before and during the Roman occupation and persisted for some time afterwards, it ceased after the Norman conquest. While some servants and serfs were effectively treated like slaves, slavery was never a part of any British system of law.
