Biblical Languages 301 Guidelines

This is where we come to delve into the biblical text. Theology is not our foremost thought, but we realize it is something that will be dealt with in nearly every conversation. Feel free to use the original languages to make your point (meaning Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This is an exegetical discussion area, so please limit topics to purely biblical ones.

This is not the section for debates between theists and atheists. While a theistic viewpoint is not required for discussion in this area, discussion does presuppose a respect for the integrity of the Biblical text (or the willingness to accept such a presupposition for discussion purposes) and a respect for the integrity of the faith of others and a lack of an agenda to undermine the faith of others.

  • Revelation 11:1-2 Greek word G3485 "Sanctuary"

Hello. While translating Revelation, I came across this Greek word G3485 in Reve 11:1-2.
[The majority of Bible versions render it as "Temple" which is the Greek word G2411, which is never once used in Revelation.]

Is there and Biblical significance of this difference?

G3485 matches the Greek ναός (naos) occurs 46 times in 40 verses

    Revelation 11:
1 And was given to me a reed like-as rod saying "rouse! and measure! the Sanctuary<3485> of the God and the Altar[Golden Altar] and those worshiping in it
2 and the Court/fold<833>[Lavar/Altar of Sacrifice] of the Sanctuary, be casting-out!<1544> out-side<1854> and no it thou should be measuring, that it was given to the Gentiles/Nations.
And the holy City they shall be treading/pathsousin <3961> (5692) forty two months.

    G3485: ναός
    ναός, ναοῦ, ὁ (ναίω to dwell), the Sept. for הֵיכָל, used of the temple at Jerusalem, but only of the sacred edifice (or sanctuary) itself, consisting of the Holy place and the Holy of holies (in classical Greek used of the sanctuary or cell of a temple, where the image of the god was placed, called also δόμος, σηκός, which is to be distinguished from τό ἱερόν, the whole temple, the entire consecrated enclosure; this distinction is observed also in the Bible;

    G2411
of the temple at Jerusalem twice in the Sept., Ezekiel 45:19; 1 Chronicles 29:4; more frequent in the O. T. Apocrypha; in the N. T. often in the Gospels and Acts; once elsewhere, viz. 1 Corinthians 9:13. τό ἱερόν and ὁ ναός differ, in that the former designates the whole compass of the sacred enclosure, embracing the entire aggregate of buildings, balconies, porticos, courts (viz., that of the men or Israelites, that of the women, that of the priests), belonging to the temple; the latter designates the sacred edifice properly so called, consisting of two parts,

    Hi and welcome to theologyweb.

I think it is just a matter of preference of the translators. Some translations are word for word and other use something called "dynamic equivalence" where the translator tries to get across the original meaning even if it take different words to do so.

Reading the passages you quoted, it is pretty obvious that even when they use "sanctuary" they are talking about the temple.
" the Sanctuary<3485> of the God and the Altar[Golden Altar] and those worshiping in it" The altar is in the Temple, right?

Or it could mean the Sanctuary (Holy of Holies) as the inner part of the Temple.

”Sanctuary” specifically, is more likely IMHO. The Holy Place, even if not the Holy of Holies.

Hello Sparko and thank you for the welcome and response.
        There were actually 2 Altars.
The Bronze Altar of Sacrifice locate in the court outside of the Sanctuary and the Golden Altar located inside the Holy Place of the Sanctuary/Tabernacle.

I agree. The OC Court of the Priests in Herod's Temple was outside the Sanctuary. This Court inside the Temple is actually the one shown being cast out outside. Most Bible versions have "leave out" which is a gross mistranslation imho.....
G1544 is used in only this 1 verse of Revelation:

        Revelation 11:2
And the Court/fold<833>[Lavar/Altar of Sacrifice] outside of the Sanctuary, be casting-out!<1544> out-side<1854> and no it thou should be measuring, that it was given to the Gentiles/Nations.
