  • Trump jokes about congressman being in hell

Let's start with the words from Debbie Dingell after Trump joked that her late husband was in hell: “Mr President, let’s set politics aside. My husband earned all his accolades after a lifetime of service. I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.”

    Here is the background info:

Trump told the Battle Creek rally that Debbie Dingell had thanked him profusely for providing “A-plus treatment” after her husband’s death in February, including ordering flags flown at half-staff.

He quoted her as saying, “Thank you so much. John would be so thrilled. He’s looking down.”

Then he added: “I said, ‘That’s OK. Don’t worry about it.’ Maybe he’s looking up. I don’t know.”

The remark drew wary oohs and aahs from the crowd in Michigan, where John Dingell was a powerful advocate for the state he represented for more than 59 years. The comment came shortly after Debbie Dingell voted in favor of two articles of impeachment against the president. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...l-john-dingell
"Yes. President Trump is a huge embarrassment. And it’s an embarrassment to evangelical Christianity that there appear to be so many who will celebrate precisely the aspects that I see Biblically as most lamentable and embarrassing." Southern Baptist leader Albert Mohler Jr.

Apologize to the nice lady for saying that. Think first next time.

"Nice lady" is rather a stretch. She just voted to impeach him on specious charges. She had made an uprovable assertion, pushback on which is generally frowned upon, but I'm having a difficult time getting worked up over this one.

Nah, this is different and he owes her the apology. His foot in mouth wasn't caused by the impeachment.

Can't say I'm exactly worked up - it's just the right thing to do.

              It was a clumsy joke.

Yep. And in bad taste and poorly timed. Trump messed up and should apologize for that.

He probably should, but he probably won't.

                    Which is bad. And sad.

It was mild, and she deserves worse.

It was dumb and inappropriate, but not worth all the hand-wringing it's generated.

I heard *about* it hours before I found the actual quote. The reality was much milder than the sturm und drang suggested.

Battle Creek — President Donald Trump took aim at a few Michigan Democrats Wednesday during a campaign rally as the Michigan House Democratic delegation joined their colleagues in voting to impeach him.

Trump also targeted U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, for voting to impeach and took a poke at her late husband John, suggesting the longtime Catholic and longest-serving member of Congress in the U.S. might be in hell.

Trump said he gave U.S. Rep. John Dingell the "A+" treatment in terms of funeral honors earlier this year. In return, Debbie Dingell then extended to Trump the "most profuse thank you" for the funeral honors and said her husband was "looking down" on them, the president said

"I said that's OK. Don't worry about it. Maybe he’s looking up, I don’t know. Maybe," Trump said to a mixture of groans, laughter and applause from the crowd.

“But let's assume he's looking down."

It's the kind of thing I wish he wouldn't do, but I'm not as concerned the stupid things he says as the important promises he keeps.

Maybe she can just frame them and hang them on the wall of her office and sigh contentedly every day when she sees them.
