He actually adresses it in: "It is common for each person to think they are different, would behave differently than others. But some things are universal, such as the surge in patriotic fever when an adversary attacks." He is not questioning what you think now under your circumstances but what you would think if circumstances were different. Not that hard to understand since he points it out for you.
