But history tells us that no country is ever quick to say "oops, my bad" when they shoot down a civilian airliner by mistake. When the US military similarly accidentally shot down a civilian airliner (Iran Air 655) over Iran in 1988, they were anything but open and honest about what had happened and their own culpability in it, and it took 8 years for the US to issue a non-apology apology for it. Likewise it took Ukraine years to admit they'd mistakenly shot down Siberia Airlines Flight 1812 by mistake in 2001, and Russia still hasn't admitted its role in mistakenly shooting down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in 2014.
Looks like in the face of overwhelming evidence, Iran has admitted to shooting down the plane.
Iranian protesters take to streets after Tehran admits Ukrainian plane was unintentionally shot down

(CNN)Anti-government protesters took to the streets of Iran Saturday after Tehran admitted that it mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet, killing 176 people.
Thousands gathered outside the gates of Amir Kabir University, near the former US embassy in Tehran, to denounce the plane crash the government blamed on human error and "US adventurism."
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 crashed Wednesday after takeoff from Tehran's airport. The crash came hours after Iran fired missiles at Iraqi military bases housing US troops in retaliation for a drone strike at Baghdad airport that killed Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.

In video posted on social media, protesters chanted for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down and for those responsible for downing the plane to be prosecuted. "Death to the dictator," some chanted.
In one video, demonstrators chanted, "Khamenei have shame. Leave the country."
A mass vigil commemorating the victims of the doomed flight escalated into an angry demonstration following the government admission, according to Iran's semiofficial FARS News Agency. University graduates migrating to Canada were among those who perished in the crash.
FARS reported that Iranian police dispersed students who entered and blocked main roads.
Their anger was fueled in large part by the nation's armed forces claim that it targeted the passenger plane unintentionally. It attributed the crash to radar activity and fear of US action.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply regrets this disastrous mistake. My thoughts and prayers go to all the mourning families," President Hassan Rouhani said.
After the missile operation in Iraq, US military flights around Iranian borders increased and Iranian military officials reported seeing aerial targets coming toward strategic centers, according to a statement by Iranian armed forces headquarters.
"The aircraft came close to a sensitive IRGC military center at an altitude and flight condition that resembled hostile targeting. Under these circumstances, the aircraft was unintentionally hit, which unfortunately resulted in death of the many Iranian and foreign nationals," the statement reads.
The victims include 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three British nationals.
"Human error at time of crisis caused by US adventurism led to disaster," Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted.

    ---

Seems like the Iranian people are not too happy with their government after all.

Objectively, the SA-15 battery (reportedly), would not have been deployed were it not for a credible threat (including war crimes) from Trump, who had already ordered two assassinations of Iranian nationals. Subjectively, the consequences of that threat — Iran shooting down a Ukrainian flight using a Russian missile system — were wildly fortunate for Trump, an Iranian goal deflection of historic proportion.

All y'all Trump apologists should dance that jig out of your system and go home.

Because at the end of the day, our state department is still telling all Americans to leave Iraq immediately (without approaching our embassy), the Iraqi parliament is calling for all of our troops to leave, Soleimani has been replaced by his deputy, and the guy who accomplished all this is still saying it made us safer.

If it weren't for that 737, Iran would be spiking in the endzone.
Yes it is IRAN'S fault. They shot down the plane. Why were they allowing planes to take off in the first place if there was a military alert and they were afraid of US retaliation? And THEY were the ones who initiated hostilities that night by shooting off missiles. It wasn't like we attacked them at night and they went on high alert and shot down the plane. They started it, then didn't ground civilian traffic and then shot down the plane.

Iran was adamant in declaring that the "response" would be at a time of their own choosing - so it wasn't like they fired off a bunch of missiles without a detailed plan.

Whoops... now the Iranian government is accusing the US of tricking the missile operator into shooting down the plane, or somehow taking control of the missile system and shooting it down ourselves:

Radio Farda relayed that Abdollahi claimed, “there had been a report about a U.S. cruise missile attack in the wake of Iran’s missile launches at two Iraqi bases a few hours earlier on January 8.”

“He claimed that the operator of the missile fired at the plane had difficulty in receiving the message of the command center when the alert about cruise missiles was removed and mistook the plane for an incoming American missile,” the outlet noted.

He then floated a similar theory to Jannati: that Americans somehow snuck into the Iranian military system and shot down the plane to make the Islamic regime look bad.

As laughable as that is, it doesn't get them off the hook for not grounding all planes while they were conducting a missile attack or were on high alert.

To mistake a DEPARTING passenger plane (speed, heading, altitude, squawk/ident) for an incoming missile is, at BEST, incredible incompetence.

It looks all those protests are starting to take a toll if they're now claiming this.
