  • Synthesis: mixed capitalism-socialism

Once, I read that two of the biggest employers worldwide are the US DoD and McDonalds, and the DoD was bigger.

At present, the US and China are roughly half capitalistic, half socialistic. It is really long past time to leave behind 40 year old slogans, and actually address the world as it is, and has been for quite some time.

One of the important tasks is to use new descriptors, as 'capitalist' and 'socialist' aren't of much use.

China is still communist. But capitalism is making inroads. I think mostly because of Hong Kong. After it went back to China, the capitalist ideas starting filtering into the rest of China, and took root as they saw how much better HK was economically than mainstream China. That and the trade with the free world. As China becomes richer from manufacturing and trade, there are more and more rich Chinese and a growing middle class that wants more than their government is giving them.

I think soon we will see a collapse of the communist government like we saw in the USSR. Either the government will step down peacefully, or there will be revolution.

This isn't Civics, so there should be more high quality posts, fewer thought-free slogans. Thanks.

Well then you should probably stay out of your own thread.

Around a hundred years ago, it was still possible to conceive of a position that was both anti-capitalism and anti-socialism, against both 'Big Business and Big Government'. One instance of this was the distributism of Chesterton and Belloc. Chesterton recognised the evils of capitalism, which was by no means morally neutral in principle or practice.

But so far as we are concerned, what has broken up households and encouraged divorces, and treated the old domestic virtues with more and more open contempt, is the epoch and power of Capitalism.

“It is Capitalism that has forced a moral feud and a commercial competition between the sexes; that has destroyed the influence of the parent in favor of the influence of the employer; that has driven men from their homes to look for jobs; that has forced them to live near their factories or their firms instead of near their families; and, above all, that has encouraged for commercial reasons, a parade of publicity and garish novelty, which is in its nature the death of all that was called dignity and modesty by our mothers and fathers.”
It is to be remembered that unrestrained capitalism has meant evils like child workers - and still does to this day in many parts of the world.

Some government regulation of the labour market is necessary and good. Another case in point:

While it is hard to see conservatives criticising government interference in markets while otherwise declaring that some examples are "pretty good", demi persists.
