Then the government should do the same with social security and unemployment, right?

In fact, the military should drop all those benefits we tax payers are paying for because not all of the members of the military will use them or even want them. If you want healthcare, you should just pay for insurance like everyone else. If you want to go to college, just pay for it like everyone else. Housing allowance? Pay for your own home or live in a barracks.

Good luck getting anyone to join unless you raise pay, by a lot, and totally restructure the military rank structure, to pay for it all.

It was just an extension of your plan for civilian employees. I guess your idea stinks when you actually apply it to yourself, huh?

          Not at all, just saying:

Pay would have to increase to meet the market on job responsibilities.

Then go find a new job. That's your prerogative. As soon as your enlistment is up, you can leave. What does that have to do with the discussion? You seem to be drifting all over the place.

Why is it wrong for the government to require companies to do certain things to protect an employees job in case they are sick? Especially if it costs the taxpayer nothing and the employer very little.

Your argument that not everyone would want it is silly. Why would you not want to be paid if you were out sick for 3 months? And your argument that not everyone needs it is also silly. You never know when you could end up with an illness or be in an accident.

Ivanka Trump. Ivanka Trump kicked off her political career at the Republican National Convention taking a stand on paid family leave, promising to make it a policy initiative of the Trump administration.

Maybe she has been successful in pursuing an issue which is important part of the family values espoused by Christians and seculars alike (imagine that, Christians and feminists on the same side!).

Or maybe Ivanka is just another of the cultural marxist ruling elite....

Which one best describes Ivanka and her push for paid family leave?

"We can provide six weeks of paid maternity leave to any mother whose employer does not offer the benefit" Donald Trump, President of the United States.

                        IS Trump right or wrong?

It appears the Rubio's bill is languishing in committee, without any sponsors willing to bring the bill forward. Which raises the question of how committed this administration is to Ivanka's pet project.

Could it be just an empty appeal for the women's vote ahead of the election? His other initiatives do have a significant amount of arm twisting.

That was just starting out. But compared to Europe, it's terrible. My sister in Germany gets like a couple of months vacation, spa days, and whatnot.

The legal minimum here in NZ is 4 weeks vacation, 1 week sick days, per year. Also there are 2 weeks worth of national holidays spread throughout the year in addition to that. In total it's 36 days of paid leave per year at minimum for anyone working full-time. Most of Europe has pretty similar numbers I think.

Is NZ or Europe able to sustain a modern economy while giving those benefits?

Do the generous benefits somehow lessen the rights of the citizen within the modern nation state, the Hobbesian Leviathan?

Those two questions pretty much sum up the opposition to paid family leave.

Well the World Bank's 2019 report ranked NZ the #1 country for their ease-of-doing-business metric. Likewise the 2019 Human Freedom Index published by the libertarian Cato Institute ranked NZ #1 country in the world for human freedom.

Apparently those 'generous benefits' which have been in place for over a decade at current levels aren't yet destroying the economy or destroying freedom. But probably any day now...

Though I'm not convinced American libertarians know anything much at all about freedom, so I'm skeptical they should be the ones ranking it.
