    Pick the right microwave frequency for your lasers and birds and atmosphere become non-issues. The real efficiency comes from locating the arrays outside the atmosphere, where the sun never stops shining.

    Turn it around, and it'd be great for repelling aliens, too.

    Two critical details are missing from this paper:

    The device requires a gradient of humidity across the mesh of proteins that provide the voltage difference. In principle, the proteins should eventually saturate and eliminate this. The researchers don't report on what happens then, or even if they know.

    To keep producing electricity, it needs to reset by not operating for 5 hours after operating 20. The paper doesn't describe what happens during this reset period.

    Without this information, the long term potential here is impossible to evaluate. It's a really cool result that it works at all, but whether it's a really important one remains to be seen.
