Precisely because it doesn't actually exist much, it plays no role in the general culture of average progressivism. I advocate for a Denmark/Sweden like mixed system where public and private spending each constitute about 50% of the economy. On an international/historical scale from zero-government to total-government, I'm smack bang in the center between libertarianism and communism. That's pretty amusing. Also pretty sad in terms of how sheltered it shows you are.
Yes, I have never seen someone so far left that he thinks Stalin was a right-winger before.

This is what the "Alt-Right" initially was (before this became bastardized by progressives to mean ANYONE not far progressive left). Liberals moving away from the progressive left because of their insane radical policies, especially the over-the-top PC push. They sort of adopted a more conservative lean, though not all the way traditionally conservative -- hence the word "alternative." A lot of them were actually atheists -- Joe Rogan, Dave Rubin, Tim Pool, etc.Last edited by seanD; 02-25-2020, 04:20 PM.

A analogous situation would be how different people hold different views about whether Jehovah's witnesses ought to be classified as 'Christian' or not... their view on that doesn't necessarily tell you what their own religious beliefs are.
People have struggled since Stalin's time with regard to how to classify the new system Stalin instituted, with many at the time coining the term "horseshoe theory" to try and describe how Stalin's supposedly "far left" government looked so much akin to what they would have normally described as a "far right" government. So they suggested that maybe the left-right political continuum 'bends' so that the ends are near each other like a horseshoe. I don't think that's a particularly informative or useful way to try and analyze politics, and think that for most purposes it's more accurate and useful just to classify Stalin's government as far-right given that is what it most closely resembles. You can quibble if you like with how and why I categorize him that way.
But my own politics aren't remotely close to Stalin's and have little to nothing to do with how I categorize him. I'm an international centrist, in that I think the data shows the optimal economy is about 50/50 public/private, with the government doing about half the economic spending and private citizens doing the other half. That's about where Denmark and Sweden are currently. It's also smack bang half-way between having zero government (ultra-libertarianism) and having a government that runs the entire economy (ultra-communism). So if you've never met anyone to the left of me, that's kinda sad because it means you've never met a single person on the entire 'left-hand' half of the political spectrum (i.e. who wants govt spending in the economy > private spending in the economy). Have you really never met a single communist?
And, as you know, on social issues I'm generally a liberal, but it can be complicated. I'm generally anti-immigration (!), generally pro people able to do whatever they want in their personal lives (sex/drugs/prostitution etc), generally anti policies that harm or priviledge particular races or people-groups, etc. Some of the most serious arguments I've gotten into have been against people here in NZ who consider themselves 'liberal activists' who seek to give a racial minority here (the 'native' people... immigrated here from east asia ~1200AD, significantly interbred with European immigrants since ~1850s) significantly more power in many and various ways than the white European-descended majority (immigrated here ~1830AD-now)... personally I wouldn't call the activists pushing for disproportionate power to a minority group 'liberals' and would consider my position of wanting equality to be the more liberal position, but they wouldn't agree. I'm guessing in your mind, you'd call my position on that issue the 'conservative' one... yet when you apply my same concern for equality to America where Blacks suffer significant injustices that are baked into the system and who have done since the days of slavery at America's founding, I would look like a liberal due to my concern for them. I would just call myself a principled liberal, and say that the working out of those principles depends on the issues and what's going on in the country in question.
Most leftists don't actually advocate infanticide to the age of 3 either.
It's also quite amusing that you try and view my entire political viewpoint through the lens of a single issue that's important to you but not at all to me.
So yeah you pretty much are what she was talking about.Last edited by Starlight; 02-25-2020, 11:19 PM."I hate him passionately", he's "a demonic force" - Tucker Carlson, in private, on Donald Trump

Also, moderate leftists usually don't want to admit that full blown leftism has usually expressed itself as a totalitarian hellhole.Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return.
