Panic IS pointless. It doesn't help but rather makes things worse.

But sticking your head in the sand isn't a whole lot better.

This is serious and to pooh pooh it is not the right course by any means.

Seems fair. Pity that we have to endure economic Armageddon at the same time. Americans are tooling up I here; expecting the zombie apocalypse.

As a medical professional, isn't that your job? Or is it your opinion that panic is warranted and helpful in these situations?

          • I heard that ISIS is telling their followers to not to go to Europe and avoid infidels.

I guess they're afraid that their suicide bombers might get sick right before they blow someone up.

              • Article in Lancet Medical Journal has theorized that those on certain Blood pressure medications (and also diabetics) may be at higher risk of contracting the virus:

                The Lancet Respiratory Medicine,

High blood pressure and diabetes medication taken by 13 million Americans could raise the risk of serious coronavirus symptoms, scientists say
ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers are medications take by at least 13 million Americans who have high blood pressure or diabetes
Coronavirus binds to cells by attaching to ACE2 receptors, which are found on the surface of upper respiratory cells
Scientists say these drugs increase amount of ACE2 they have on their cells, which could cause more copies of the virus to 'hijack' cells
However, patients should not stop taking their medications unless their doctor says so...

I'm nearing 60 y.o. and I'm on a ACE inhibitor blood pressure med...

I'm over 60 and on Lisinopril. Considering my blood pressure when I wasn't on it I might get to decide between coronavirus and a stroke.

Yep, I'm on the same one. I'm going to see if my Dr. will change me over to something else. My wife is on Verapamil which is a calcium channel blocker which should be safer...

We have someone at my job who is in his 70s, has difficulty walking and is on chemotherapy for cancer. When I saw him come in I told him that while I'm not authorized to tell him this but unless you really need the money you should get your butt back home pronto. I should note that I didn't see him later.

I'd have thought the satirical tone was obvious MM.

As rogue said, of course panic isn't helpful. My point is that what you call "panic" is in fact much closer to "appropriate response to mitigate a very serious situation".

Unbelievable, hope those deaths were worth it because doom and gloom hasn’t happened because Trump is president, but crying wolf might do the trick.
Fear mongering? Pix, the list of damages Trump has wrought in the past 3+ years is enumerable and measurable. It is not fear mongering - it is the reality of what he has done. His colossal and continual mismanagement of the current crisis is only the latest incident.

The Wilshire 5000 (which I find far more useful than the DJIA) is currently trading 500 points above the level it was when Trump took office. The 3% and 4% economic growth he promised never materialized. His GDP growth numbers are almost exactly where they were under Obama, but under Trump it was at the cost of a $1T deficit in times of a reasonably healthy economy. Meanwhile, climate change has seen zero attention and the fossil fuel sector has been buttressed and supported. Our position as a world leader has been eroded on many fronts, leaving a vacuum for China and Russia to step into. Our ability to harness partners in times of war and physical peril are eroded because we cannot keep our promises to those we engage with. Our media institutions have been repeatedly attacked, lies have become the new accepted norm. Childish insults, bullying, and trolling have become the new norm (rather than the exception) in our politics.

I said 3.5 years ago that we would all need to be willing to suffer a bit in order to rid ourselves of this man. Personally, I'm willing to see most of my retirement nest egg vaporized if it means he is not re-elected in November.

I suspect many on the right are not truly grasping just how strongly those of us who oppose this man want to see him gone, and are willing to sacrifice if that is what it takes. Every election since 2016 has told the same story: the left and moderates are angry and motivated. Elections that should have been a slam dunk have been a tight squeeze, even if they did ultimately swing right. I think November is going to be the beginning of the end of this Trump-led travesty. Hopefully, if that happens, what remains of the Republican party will examine itself, reconsider its choices, and re-find its soul.

The point of the post, MM, is "the joke isn't funny." The number is actually too close to reality, and the reality is a grim one.
