ETA: Apparently a data entry error. The number has been adjusted down to 71K instead of 91K.
I wonder what part of their handling of the epidemic stems from their desire for secrecy, avoiding pad publicity, etc.

But one point which strikes a chord is their desire to avoid panic, and present a front of calm controlled wisdom in handling the crisis. Panic is a theme of tweb posters, Andrew Cuomo castigated de Blasio of NYC for fomenting panic, and even was behind some of Trump's (and Senator Burr's) comments.

Getting caught fudging data would backfire. Sad part is the US has little date about how the disease really spreads, we do not have the testing capability to track new cases (We have to rely on data generated by countries with socialized medicine!)

Well Obama did claim in speech in Minneapolis after accepting the Democrat Party's nomination in 2008 that

"...I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth."

        That actually did happen.

        • As for what I would have done...there are several things:

Directed the CDC to validate the German protocols and clear state labs to develop tests as soon as he WHO declared a global pandemic.
You're still thinking like a child. Previously it was a good thing that the bureaucracy was opposing Trump, 'Trump should be doing what the experts tell him to do'. Now 'Trump should have told the medical experts at CDC what to do and they would have done it!!! '

Adopted a "the buck stops here" posture - it is the mark of a leader who is taking charge. "Not my fault" is the whine of a toddler.
You don't actually want Trump to lead unless you see a chance of putting blame on him. Childish.

This is dumb. Trump cut the bureaucracy that he needed to deal with a crises like this, because "government bad" people, like him and most of the posters here. Bureaucracy is also in place to stop Trump doing things he shouldn't be doing, coz, he seems to be doing that too.

Yeah, we don't want the Republican party to lead, if they've made such leadership impossible because of their ideology (cut everything). If the party had its way with the government, then today there would be people starving in the streets and soon the bodies would be piling up. Most businesses would soon be in ruins. Of course, they are hypocrites and have to save face. Which, we are thankful for. However, the damage has already been done, they are solving a problem they caused in the first place.

Only a mindless moron like you thinks that having a 'task force' helps anything. More likely given the advanced state of the CDC it would be additional layers of bureaucracy that will slow things down.

              How dumb can you be?

What Trump should have done from the beginning was do what he can on a personal level (shut down borders), then go around the CDC bureaucracy and their '''''''''''''''''experts''''''''''''''''''''''' and talk to governors and mayors to deal with it on a state level.

Huh? Your extremist ideology continues to cloud your poor judgement. No surprises there.

That's the one. It appears what doesn't work is cutting key programmes aimed at dealing with a crises like this, on a national and international level: https://forensicnews.net/2020/03/10/...in-the-making/ There was also very little international discussion, why, because Trump has been spitting in the face of his allies for the past three years - no doubt.

It's the same level of idiocy. Obamacares = Obama actually cares, and assuming that the task force will be effective just because it's supposed to do so.

Assuming it won't be effective, is right-wing dogma. Ebola was wiped out, by an effective task-force and an international effort.

That was not bureaucracies on their home turf, idiot. At home they'll first be minimising the problem, carrying out endless meetings, and refusing to depend on others, like the German stuff and insist on developing their own test kits.

It is now established that the US CDC absolutely refused to let state or other institutions develop testing of their own and only reluctantly gave way when pressure became too much.

'But more bureaucracy would have helped matters!!!!!!!!!!!!', the absolute moron parrots.

Your dysfunctional system was made to be dysfunctional by Trump and his allies: https://forensicnews.net/2020/03/10/...in-the-making/ bureaucracy is not inherently dysfunctional, since, as you agree, it can effectively stop Ebola.
