De Blasio announced plans for the 750-bed $20.8 million field hospital in Red Hook on March 31, one day after the USNS Comfort hospital ship arrived in New York to aid in the fight against coronavirus.

WABC reported that the USNS Comfort treated 182 patients over three and a half weeks before it departed at the end of April.

The makeshift hospital in Brooklyn was slated to open in April, but it was not ready for use until May 4, and the site is now being disbanded after not being used, the City reported.

Actually anticipated for more illnesses, but eventually not needed, because at the time the COVID 19 cases were beginning to decline as they have since.

    • As the country comes out of lockdown, and the politicians say that the danger has passed, and people go back to their old habits, the infection rate will pick up again, and after a few weeks, the death rate will turn sharply upwards. All this is totally predictable. You will see it by the end of June.

Alabama ICUs are already at capacity.

Movie theaters, casinos and a host of entertainment venues across the state of Alabama will be able to reopen starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Gov. Kay Ivey decreed in an executive order even though coronavirus case numbers are spiking across Alabama, with the highest single-day total of new cases reported Thursday since the pandemic began and as ICUs have filled up in the state’s capital city of Montgomery.

All the effort from the past 2 months of lockdown is going into the incinerator as we speak.

London: An Oxford University vaccine trial has only a 50 per cent chance of success because coronavirus is fading so rapidly in Britain, a project co-leader has warned.

The warning comes as new data reveals that there are now 224 vaccines in development around the world - almost double the total of just a month ago.
The race to produce a vaccine could be hampered by falling virus rates, scientists warn.

Professor Adrian Hill said an upcoming Oxford vaccine trial, involving 10,000 volunteers, threatened to return "no result" because of low transmission of COVID-19 in the community.

It's hilarious that the report is trying to make this sound like bad news.

It is bad news if you have a vaccine candidate but you cannot test it in a double blind trial because physical distancing measures have been so effective. They should sent it to Brazil; let them see if it works.

This is one of those cases where it seems like these volunteers should go and shake people's hands in hospital, and not wear a mask while doing it.

The reason they can't test it is because the China flu is disappearing much faster than anybody predicted. You'd think people would embrace this as something to celebrate.

Of course that doesn't fit the fear mongers' narrative, so they try to make it sound like an inexplicably bad thing.

The infection rate is going down while we continue with distancing and good hygiene. If those things are relaxed, it will come back. This is not fear mongering; it is simply how contagions work. Fear makes for irrational decision making. “A pilot needs to know the condition of his craft.” The better you understand your situation, the better your decisions will be.

The data does not support your claim. While some countries are seeing a downturn due to their efforts to mitigate the virus, others are just beginning to see the virus take hold and surge. Globally, the incidence of new cases continues to rise. If you look at the running 10-day average for global new cases, the current peak is Sunday (the day before yesterday) at 97,247 average cases per day over the previous 10 days.

In the U.S., we hit our 10-day running average peak on 4/11 at 31,965 new confirmed cases. In the six weeks since then, we have only dropped back to 22,194. It took us only 9 days to climb from a 10-day running average of 20,062 to 31,965, and after six weeks we still have not dropped back down to that number.

Pointing to a few countries that have seen a drop in cases as proof that we are "past this thing" when the global numbers tell a different story is like pointing to one glacier that is advancing to prove "global warming is not happening" when the vast majority of glaciers are actually in retreat. It is an example of selectively choosing data to affirm a narrative - something you do (and are called out on) on a regular basis.

In britain - due to mitigation efforts to control it. Stop listening to breitbart spin and look at the actual data. Most countries are doing what they can to stop it, and those stay at home/shelter in place etc efforts have paid off. Unlike in countries that have balked at such and where it is out of control, like Brazil which has leaped to 2nd only to the US in both cases and new cases per day, and Mexico which is now #17 in number of cass, but #7 in terms of growth.

Are you really this stupid MM? Anytime we get to the data or the numbers, you seem to just completely lose a capacity for reason. Is the only thing you are capable of doing is reading breitbart of fox and then echoing whatever line they feed you? I'm giving you the numbers - the actual data. I'm not going to some news source and feeding you their particular spin.

                          • The US is now officially over 100,000 deaths due to the corona-virus. We are still adding about 20,000 cases per day. And our numbers appear to have stopped their decline in what appears to be a response to 'reopening'. Georgia, Alabama, Florida, California are seeing rising numbers. California, once a purported 'anomaly' state is seeing a steady rise since April and is now at or near 100,000 cases.

We had a lot of people out pretending all is well this weekend. So, based on a 5 day average incubation, stay tuned and look for increases in the daily active case counts beginning the end of this week and continuing through mid June with increases in death rates delayed a week or two from that.
