H-E-B is operating on adjusted hours right now. All locations are open 8am to 8pm, to allow restocking. But even now they are restocking while the store is open. The paper goods aisle is completely empty and has been the last few times I've been. No toilet paper, no paper towels, no tissues. They had a little bit of milk today but no eggs at all. They are very low on frozen pizza and certain other frozen foods. I didn't even venture into the produce department.

Most stores in town have adjusted their hours. The pet store where I normally buy dog food is strongly encouraging people to order online for curbside pickup. Same for the shop where I buy yarn. Non-essential doctor's offices are closed. School is out. Anyone who can work from home is doing so.

We have had a handful of confirmed cases in our county and at least one that I know of in a bordering county. A local hospital had more than a dozen doctors quarantined at one point, I'm not sure if they still are.

The Kroger and Walmart stores that were open 24 hours now open at 8 and 7AM respectively (I think they close at 8 as well) with some of the latter allowing seniors in early.

I've seen pictures of produce sections from Spain where the bins are empty except for one item which are chock full. That's broccoli. I don't know if that's because they just have it in abundance or that Spaniards just don't like broccoli.

Around here russet potatoes are fairly scarce although sweet potatoes are usually available. I was able to snag one of the former of the type wrapped in plastic with instructions for microwaving them so that I could have a baked potato this week.

And pharmacies/drug stores. Those are the only two although I kind of wonder if some gas stations might be open as well (those where you pay at the pump).

If they can't get stuff in, then they might have to shut down.

I am going to Kroger's today to pick up some stuff. But over half of it is out of stock again, including any kind of bread, decaf coffee, dishwashing liquid, brown sugar, flour and yeast (I was going to make my own freaking bread but nooooo...) and doritos.

I have some expired yeast and one bag of flour so I might try it anyway to see what happens.

While most packaged bread is out or in short supply the bakery at Walmart always seems to have some including the loaves of French bread that sell for $1.

              • Was at Walmart this morning. NOW they are limiting quantities of non-existent TP.

Toilet paper is still moving onto the store shelves, but is selling at a brisk pace. It is not non existent. I think most mills are up and running, with trucks moving the product out. Around here, normal amounts are still moving into the area. Maybe the Canadian supply chains have broken down, but the Americans chains are still working, if not at full capacity. Toilet paper is still moving, as far as I know. As soon as it comes in on a truck, it is moved out onto the floor, but I've seen Walmart place full pallets on the floor, as they do with the hot selling products.

                  Duh.

Our Dollar Store has gotten quite clever -- they are selling a 4 pack of TP, but the cardboard tube is about 20% bigger in diameter, the TP is wrapped loosely around the tube, and the outside diameter of the toilet paper roll is smaller. 150 sheets per roll.

I've noticed that occasionally these dollar stores are actually more expensive than the grocery stores on certain products. I rotate between shampoos and the cheap one I get is 88 cents at Kroger.

Yeah, often the Dollar Stores are more about convenience than cost savings. Ours, however, generally has MILK cheaper than the grocery store. Though, yesterday, I bought a gallon of 2% at Walmart for $1.38!!!

That's their schtick. They sell products in smaller quantities and sizes at a "low" price that actually ends up being more expensive if you compare the cost to the regular size items in other stores. They aren't a bargain at all.

I wrote that on March 13. On March 13, I was embarrassed by the insensitivity of the thread title. Today I'm mentally ticking off all the people I know who are at high risk, and thinking about Italy, two weeks ahead of us. In Italy, today, if you're over 60 and seriously ill with covid-19, there's no respirator for you. They've passed the red line. In two weeks, I expect we will, too. Rationing of ventilators is coming.

My brother is 67. He has severe respiratory issues.
