It happens to coincide with spring break, so that's one week taken care of. Then there are calamity days which probably account for another week. And schools have a number of tricks they use to make up for lost days, the most popular being "homework packets" that are supposed to take the place of a day of learning. So most likely, they will still get out on time for summer recess.

Company did a firm-wide test of our VPN network Wednesday, and the NY office is working from home today. I'm taking my firm laptop home every night. I expect to get an announcement any day now that I'll be working from home until further notice. I can do pretty much all of my job from home and save $200/month in commuting costs. The only downside is if the courts close, I won't have any work to do.

The kids around here have so many days off for teachers to do "personal development" that another couple of weeks wouldn't make any difference to anybody except parents who need daycare. Which are probably also going to shut down.

I've heard of no school closures yet in my province, but that could change.

This going to hit many people very hard. Think about the people who's work is not shutting down but their kids school is closed. Daycare centers are also closing. I have a friend who owns a small business, T-shirt shop. The cancellation of the South by Southwest concert in Austin is going to cost him over $20,000 that he doesn't have since he had to order shirts and hats in advance to make sure he had enough. also, almost all college and H.S. sports are shut down...this is going to hurt big time for a lot of people.

Edit to add that I just heard they've closed the provincial university and the province is limiting gatherings of more than 250 people.

Dallas just enacted a ban on meetings/gatherings of over 500...that includes churches BTW.

They said churches, grocery stores, airports and malls are allowed to remain open here. I suspect that some churches with large audiences might decide to shut down on their own.

In Australia non essential gatherings of over 500 people are canceled. School is still on I think. My sister in law is a fund accountant and they’ve been working till 10pm the last week as end of day share trading prices are released later each day. Our defense minister tested positive so parliament might slow down. I’m working from home and up to season 4 on Vikings and my wife has filled our basement with ten thousand dollars worth of supplies.

They've shut down the House of Commons here.

You have a good wife. I'm not worried enough to stock up on that amount of emergency stuff.

It’s because we had to cancel our overseas holiday we had booked for may.

Also I was at our state Supreme Court two days ago and it was full of Chinese people in the consumer and commercial division. I’ve never seen so many Chinese interpreters before. From what I’ve heard most seem to be about tenancy disputes. The Chinese community here are struggling financially as people are avoiding their businesses.

That is really tragic. It's happening everywhere, here as well.

I believe that the media is a great deal at fault for the panic and outright prejudicial attitudes, against the Chinese, in this particular situation. If they would shut up about some things aside from the basic facts there would be far less of this type of behaviour from the populace.

This is why many countries like Germany, Japan, or the UK choose the DTDT route. Shutting things down is very costly.

Probably Trump wanted DTDT too, but it's not possible with an adversarial media.

The only way my workplace will shut down is if our retail locations do. Without orders coming in from the stores, we'll have nothing to do.

The event industry is done for the foreseeable future. It affects my company which provides comprehensive staging, audio, and video services, but also convention centers, arenas, caterers, television, radio, performers, an unimaginable number of freelancers...

My company president says he hopes to start hiring us back by June, but who knows...

And I still have a sneaking hunch that this is all being blown wildly out of proportion.
