It’s actually how we learn and improve our communities. I think Starlight is thinking of the 5 eyes members (Australia, UK, USA, Canada, NZ). The interest stems from the similarities in our societies so each new policy or major court decision can directly affect the others.

The legal system is essentially the same and we cite US, UK and NZ cases quite frequently. Not so much Canada but I’m sure we can.

The US is of course the most interesting out of the 5 because they are the strongest militarily and economically in the world and the other four have the same system of government.

His claim that English speakers can’t follow politics in other countries because of a language barrier is nonsense. Most countries have English news editions. The US’s place, in the world, makes much more sense.

You might say that English isn't necessarily the most common language in them, even if it's their national language, but we're not talking about "on the street" communications, but the communications you would have access to from outside the country, i.e. the Internet. For example, even though Hasua is the most spoken language in Nigeria, all of the biggest Nigerian websites are in English.

Language plays a part, and is probably why the UK gets more attention than other European countries in the US, but I think it only plays a small role. It's not a matter of language, but a matter of influence. The US is practically in a league of its own when it comes to sheer international influence. The only country that can rival the US in that area is China... but they're also a dictatorship so there's not really much in the way of "politics" to follow (their policies matter, but not so much their politics). I think if they were actually democratic and therefore had politics to pay attention to, you'd see a lot of attention paid to their politics from outside.
In fact, English is recognized as an official language in a total of 67 different countries, as well as 27 non-sovereign entities. Moreover, it is a major business language, as well as the official language of a number of the world’s most important institutions, including the United Nations, NATO and the European Union.

We should go ahead and change the name of the language to "American." After all Watermelon just said we are bigger and more powerful than the other English speaking countries.

I know vastly more about it than you or most Americans, but that's because I'm a politics geek who has spent a lot of time learning. Which seems to make you really bitter.

              and society!
Are you simply unaware of the amount of American TV and movies the rest of the world typically watches on a daily or yearly basis? Not to mention, the US is a relatively common destination for English-speakers to visit or have friends live (I have both). Just because you know nothing about a society of another country, doesn't mean they don't know plenty about American society.

It amuses me that you seem to have convinced yourself of how important and great America is, and yet get offended when anyone from other countries knows anything about it or is interested in it.

                  Wrong. Way wrong.

Of those, the US is the largest,
Geography, population, economy, military - yes.

                  most dysfunctional by far,
That's subjective. If by "dysfunctional" you mean "successful" by means not-always popular internationally, then yes.

                  most hilariously idiotic
                  Same as above.

has the most ridiculous leaders who give the best value comedy unintentionally
More subjectivity, but I might agree with this one sometimes.

has by far the most backwardly conservative political policies
Globalism is a policy that works well for small, dependent nations. It sucks the lifeblood from rich nations.

and is the only one of them who insanely invades other countries regularly
Finally, something I can agree wholeheartedly on.

I spent half of my life growing up in Europe and still visit family there regularly. My mom was German. Dad was in the Army. I think I have a bit more actual knowledge of the world than you do.

It amuses me that you speak out of one side of your mouth about how conceited Americans are about their importance and nobody cares and out of the other you tell us you study our government and society and know "more than a native"

The fact that star gets his information about America from TV shows and movies explains a whole lot.

It'd be equivalent to thinking one is an expert on Japanese culture because they watch a bunch of animes.

I think so. US is still the most influential nation on earth so it makes sense that the world takes more interest there.

We’ve been watching 7th Heaven and wonder how anyone would survive with that much drama in their lives. TV and movies are made to entertain, not represent our mainly boring and mundane daily lives.

I'm still wondering how Japan keeps rebuilding Tokyo in time to be leveled by yet another of the legion of gargantuan monsters that apparently infest the islands and surrounding area
