  • Rationing of food

I think it's time - before the overbuying by panicked people creates an actual supply shortage.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/26/us/wo...rnd/index.html

I doubt we are equipped to do this quickly, but whereas we currently have plenty of actual supplies, continued panic buying is pushing the supply system to its breaking point. People will not stop on their own it appears, especially as the continued stress begins to actually create a supply problem. If you think store shelves look picked over now, just wait till the news begins reporting that there are actual shortages.

This is yet another instance where our federal, state, and local governments are BEHIND. There needs to be limits on the number of items per customer of family per week. Implementation will take a few weeks at least, we can't wait.

Why does an inept government have to do everything? Stores themselves can put these limits into place. In fact, the Ralph's where I shop stopped self-check out probably so they can monitor this better. Smart and Final has put up notices limiting the number of certain items per person. Why do you love government so much?

Government saying that food rationing will be implemented in a few weeks is the best way to empty the shelves and create a supply shortage.

I agree. But they aren't. And I don't love the government 'so much'. Wouldn't it be nice if people did right by others and no laws were needed at all?

So the government exists to step in and keep order when people gut nutsy and do things that endanger others. That is the differnece between civilization and anarchy. An effective but limited government requires a moral and good population with lots of internalized social responsibility.

We aren't really there in this country. We are all focussed on ourselves and our rights. Not so much the other fellow. But maybe this pandemic will bring out some of that that has only been superficially suppressed?

I think costco is imposing limits. The local food lion is not, with the expected results. captialism says "let it play out". I'm not sure that is wise.

But maybe full on rationing is too much. But if that is not what we want, WE (all of us) will have to start acting responsibily and with some element of self control.

(BTW - I grabbed the wrong link but can't seem to find that actual story I wanted to post here. What I got was a story about a lady coughing on a stores produce and ruing 35,000 worth of food.)

You are correct there as well. It would be best if the stores just unilaterally decided to put limits on how much each customer can get of items in short supply. A government recommendation to do that, effective immediately, would prevent (or reduce) the effect of such a run on the stores.

What I expect though is that once we see stories about real shortages, that is EXACTLY what is going to happen.

Uh, no. You downplay it like it's no big deal, but government enforcing sell limitations on a store is beyond the pale of government control. And you DO love government. In fact, I don't think I've ever known a Christian that advocates for government enforcement of anything and everything and pushes it so hard and as much as you do.

You are now heading straight for ad hominem territory seanD. I'll try to avoid tit-for-tat. But then again, I'm also just going to ignore that element of your reply.

Government rationing has been necessary in the past when there were shortages. We will see it eventually again if we don't stop over-buying. It's a pay me now or pay me later sort of thing. I do believe it would be wise for stores to limit purchases of short supply items, and a government recommendation is a good way to spur them to action nationwide.

Every store I’ve been to had been putting limits on short supply goods, for several weeks now.

I came across an article on Slate the other day that suggested that the supply chain is actually fine for the time being. I wished it had gone more indepth, but it was here: https://slate.com/business/2020/03/g...ply-chain.html

I think inflation is far more of a concern than lack of food.

Pretty much started this week around here AFAICT. When I grabbed a package of toilet paper yesterday for my neighbor was the first time I saw a sign saying that there was a limit (1 pack per customer).

Wish they introduced this in the UK a lot sooner and forced larger stores especially to enforce a max limit on certain items. They estimate an extra £1bn of food in people's homes now, so the shelves are mostly empty. This could have been avoided. Some large supermarkets have an elderly only hour first thing in the morning, and have extended the offer to NHS workers and the like. Should be been enforced, and a heck of a lot sooner.

Interesting. That is not happening here. Needs to be.

Not so sure about that. At the current time, if I want hamburger, or milk, I have to get to the store within a few hours of when the truck gets there. Bread, early morning. Paper goods- no way to know 'cause the trucks are no longer coming at regular times.
