  • Reuters: Five days of worship that set a virus time bomb in France

Very sad but important article: Special Report: Five days of worship that set a virus time bomb in France

From the stage of an evangelical superchurch, the leader of the gospel choir kicked off an evening of prayer and preaching: “We’re going to celebrate the Lord! Are you feeling the joy tonight?”

“Yes!” shouted the hundreds gathered at the Christian Open Door church on Feb. 18. Some of them had traveled thousands of miles to take part in the week-long gathering in Mulhouse, a city of 100,000 on France’s borders with Germany and Switzerland.
The prayer meeting kicked off the biggest cluster of COVID-19 in France - one of northern Europe’s hardest-hit countries - to date, local government said. Around 2,500 confirmed cases have been linked to it. Worshippers at the church have unwittingly taken the disease caused by the virus home to the West African state of Burkina Faso, to the Mediterranean island of Corsica, to Guyana in Latin America, to Switzerland, to a French nuclear power plant, and into the workshops of one of Europe’s biggest automakers.
"Yes. President Trump is a huge embarrassment. And it’s an embarrassment to evangelical Christianity that there appear to be so many who will celebrate precisely the aspects that I see Biblically as most lamentable and embarrassing." Southern Baptist leader Albert Mohler Jr.

No doubt there are plenty of other large gatherings of all sorts all around the world (cruise ships, anyone?) that have spread the virus.

For the sarcastically impaired the following is said in jest

It's surely just a coincidence that the article Charles chose to talk about this is one that talks about Christians gathering.

Heaven forbid that he mention what the New York Times called the "gathering of 16,000 at a Malaysian mosque [which] became the pandemic’s largest known vector in Southeast Asia, spreading the coronavirus to half a dozen countries". It was a meeting held at the beginning of March of the world's largest Islamic missionary movement Tablighi Jamaat, a group both the FBI and the British equivalent M15 describe as being a fertile recruiting ground by extremists with as many as "80% percent of the Islamist extremists hav[ing] come from Tablighi ranks, prompting French intelligence officers to call Tablighi Jamaat the 'antechamber of fundamentalism.'"

They've tried to organize other large meetings in both Indonesia and India since then but were prevented.

But then there is the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan who allowed a quarter of a million people to gather in Lahore in mid March, to participate in the Tableeghi Ijtema, organized by, who else, a local branch of the Tablighi Jamaat, which "spread the coronavirus from Kyrgyzstan to Gaza"

The attempts to talk about anything but the topic is duly noted. Since we are currently having discussions about gatherings in churches I think it is an important article. So far every poster has failed to give a fair response.

That is a false statement . If you want to stay in the thread stay on topic and don't make false statements about me.

I guess you have a point and I shouldn't have said that's the "only" thing you're interested in since you've shown a profound propensity for being a (highly selective) net nanny as well.

Why only focus on Christians when other groups also held large gatherings during the time period in question?

We're just looking for a little fairness and consistency, Chuck, or is that too much to expect from you?

And yet another post looking to talk about something else, in this case my person. The first reply was slightly on topic. The rest was pure whataboutism.

For those who wish to discuss anything but the topic (including my person): Feel free to start your own thread. Leave this one.

So it seems the answer is yes, a little fairness and consistency is too much to expect from you. Thank you for clarifying.

At best this is just an example of how disease can spread in normal situations.

We may need this to spread anyhow. What happens when we all start normal lives again?

And yet another mainly off topic response. Seems it is very, very hard for some of you to talk about the topic. If you want to talk about other topics start a new thread and leave this one.
