Maybe it is the feds first, not the states. Before, governors were told to get their own stuff and not depend on the federal government. The states did that. Now it is the federal government is moving in and grabbing the needed supplies.

And the LA Times is reporting that it is going on at the hospital level, the feds confiscating supplies at the local level. It is behind a paywall, so I do not know the details, and haven't seen more reports in the media on it.

Trump and Co. cannot have it both ways, leaving it up to states and then have the feds micromanage the states' supply chains. New York and California are both trying to manage the supply in their states, I assume other states are doing so also. The national stock pile is not the states' stock pile after all (but look at a map of the United States and all you see are states).

The federal government will begin seizing exports of personal protective equipment, or PPE, until it decides if the tools should be kept in the country to fight the coronavirus.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced Wednesday it will prevent respirators, surgical masks and surgical gloves from leaving the country. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will then determine if the equipment should be returned, purchased by the government or exported.

“FEMA and CBP are working together to prevent domestic brokers, distributors, and other intermediaries from diverting these critical medical resources overseas,” the two agencies said in a joint statement.

What is wrong with selling masks to foreign governments? The sale to Israel is a case in point. From what I understand, the Trump feud with 3M ended up with little if any real change. The threat to interrupting supply chains is great. But the difference is that the same [b]posters who argued for NOT exporting masks have fallen silent[/b[ now that Trump is sending them to Israel.
