  • Thanks to Trump there’s a Hydroxychloroquine Shortage

Yes, you read that correctly. Here is the entire title: Thanks to Trump, There’s a Hydroxychloroquine Shortage for People Who Need It

As a patient advocate who struggles with lupus, an autoimmune disorder, Morley knew this was not just wrong, but dangerously so. He takes hydroxychloroquine(also known as Plaquenil) twice a day to manage his flare-ups. The drug, he says, is “lifesaving” to people in his community — yet thanks to Trump, many people have contacted him terrified, saying they’re unable to access it.

    “I’m literally shaking,” he says.
In the rheumatology community, the response to Trump’s comments is “basically fury,” says Dr. Michael Lockshin, professor of medicine and director of the Barbara Volcker Center at Hospital for Special Surgery.
For those who have been regularly taking the drug and have to stop taking it, flareups can be severe, says Lockshin, even possibly deadly depending on the severity of one’s symptoms.
Currently, there is no proven treatment or vaccine for COVID-19; though there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest hydroxychloroquine may be helpful for treating COVID-19 patients, Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health has cautioned against touting it as a miracle drug, as President Trump has. “In terms of science, I don’t think we can definitively say it works,” Fauci told CBS’s Face the Nation. “The data are really just at best suggestive.”

It is good that we have confirmation of the effectiveness of Chloroquine. We definitely need to step of production of this.

The results from doctors who have used this with patients is still a good starting point for advocacy of the drug.

Other people who have had an ongoing need for this may have to sacrifice a bit in light of the epidemic. We all have been asked to sacrifice a lot.

Hydroxychloroquine is a recommended treatment by many countries, and many doctors see it as the best so far. The shortage is Trump's fault?

Of course it's Trump's fault, because he's the most powerful man in the world. When he says, "Jump!" other world leaders say, "How high, sir?"

I just got some prescriptions refilled. I usually get 3 months worth at a time. I am now only able to get 1 month at a time, because stupid people hoard their prescriptions and stupid doctors renew those scripts before they need to be renewed.

The problem is stupid people, and not President Trump. The problem is the manufacturer, and not President Trump. The manufacturer should have upped their production as soon as the word got out that the drug might be a treatment for the Wuhan virus. Because people are going to be stupid and hoard it if they can get it from stupid doctors who will wantonly renew those scripts. Leaving other people who need the drug for other purposes in short supply.

You cannot possibly blame President Trump for the shortage of the drugs that I need. You can't blame him for the shortsightedness of the makers of chloroquine in light of the fact that this news about the drug was made public quite a while ago. By Trump, btw, and everybody ignored him and said he was "BAD" for suggesting the drug and they still call him "BAD" even though there is not evidence that it might at the very least help.

There's been a shortage from time to time for years:

So, manufacturers, supply and demand, and pricing all cause shortages. Not Trump.

Trump is such a notorious nut-job, it surprises me that anyone takes his advice on anything.

And the thing is, there's not very convincing evidence that hydroxychloroquine actually does anything useful for COVID cases. The original study suggesting it might was full of methodological flaws and authorities are backing away from it fast. Might be time to put "hydroxychloroquine might cure COVID" into the "vaccines might cause autism" basket.

The medicine still sounds worthwhile for use with many situations of severe illness. It is useful to point out where use of the chloroquine is counterindicated. And people should not just take this for fear of the virus. However, this emergency use of chloroquine still is reasonable.

Days or weeks before Bad Orange Man started touting it, Laura Ingraham mentioned it. She was an early advocate because she's had personal experience using it when she's traveled to Africa. Her health experts -- Dr. Stephen Smith (infectious diseases) and Dr. Oskoui (Johns Hopkins cardiologist) -- advocate for its use, but only under care of physicians that know how to pre-screen and continuously monitor for certain heart issues. Dr. Oz has been all over Fox News -- especially Fox and Friends and Hannity, I think -- advocating it, with the same cautions.

It's safe in the right patients with the right doctors.

When it is used, the doctors using it say it works better when started early, or even prophylactically, than as a nearly-last resort.
