  • American credibility in the Trump era

In 2005, after the SARS outbreak, the international rules on dealing with epidemics, we signed the IHR-2005. Governments had an economic and political incentive with hold information on an epidemic, the regulations were designed to stop that, and we signed on to it.

We did close off air travel with China. But we also closed off air travel to Taiwan. We did not target areas that had the disease.

Maybe Trump listened to his trusted adviser trade Ron Vara, a real expert. But will the world accept America's leadership going forward?

    Specifically one province at first

But we also closed off air travel to Taiwan.
Who told you that? Taiwan closed off their own air travel, not us.

No. Dr. Fauci already told us who Trump listened to.

But will the world accept America's leadership going forward?
Of course they will. They still do. Why do you think we are the only nation getting international flak for how we handled the epidemic when other nations did both far more and far less? Because we are the global leaders and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

I think the US under republican leadership will struggle to lead the world going forward. It feels like the western world and US democrats are, for the most part, progressing down the same path while the US republicans are going somewhere else. They will remain influential due to their power but the further the distance the harder it will be to connect.

Now that the UK has left EU they will hope to form a new group with Australia, Canada and NZ called SBFNZ which stands for ‘Super best friends and New Zealand’.

The US will continue to lead no matter who is in the chair.

          Lead in what respect?

We are in the middle of a global crisis and no one is looking to the US for guidance.

What world are you living in? EVERYONE is looking to the US for guidance. Who do you think they are looking to? Jacinda Arden? Justin Trudeau? Xi Jinping?

Umm obviously not in your censored world. Everyone is looking at the US because it is the worst affected nation in the world. No one is looking to the US and thinking ‘wow I hope our country can get like that! We should call Trump and ask him for guidance!’.

Based on per capita infections/deaths, we're actually doing quite well, all things considered.

I hope it stays that way. I doubt it will though.

That report is unimportant. They focus on the "number of cases" which is a meaningless number. It is meaningless first because there are great numbers of people designated to have coronavirus simply because they say they have flu-like symptoms or that the hospital noted flu-like symptoms. Secondly, the PCR test is reported to have up to 80% false positives-- the test does not detect the novel coronavirus specifically -- only similarities to it. The PCR test is only recommended for research purposes -- not diagnosis. The test fails to detect the amount of virus there may be. Nor is there methodological sampling to determine how extrapolate how much of the country may have this. The high numbers then are speculative, having been obtained in numerous ways. The count of "infected" people is simply a reflection of how much effort was made to obtain these numbers. It is sort of like counting the stars in visible in a telescope -- there are too many subjective aspects to make any useful claims of the actual number of stars.

I thought the relationship was more like the crazy uncle that you didn't want to admit you were related to.

Team Trump at the White House did manage to secure a special shipment of masks from Taiwan. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/polit...ff/ar-BB12GfAm

Nurses had to do without tests, the test magically appeared for the entire NBA and for white house staff. No masks available for hospitals, special deal was struck to secure face masks at the time Trump was championing the closing off commerce, the White House was successful in securing masks for itself.
