  • The QUOTE Function

OK, this is not so much "civics", but it happens here SO MUCH that I'll start this here until it gets kicked elsewhere.

I have noticed a number of posters seem to pretty much freak out, or, at best, challenge other posters as being DISHONEST for quoting PART of a post.
Recently, one poster, whose name I shall not mention, but his initials are CarpeSomething () politely challenged a quote I posted because he wanted to see the actual words that were quoted "in context".

I was dumbfounded, because I used the actual QUOTE FUNCTION, which provides a hyperlink to take you back to the VERY POST from which the quote was taken, and, hence, you can see the entire context by following the hyperlinks in the quotes from those quotes, etc.

What he did NOT know (and he's a pretty smart guy, so I assume that others may also not know this) is that using the ACTUAL QUOTE FUNCTION automatically embeds a hyperlink, though it be small and unobtrusive, and apparently, easily overlooked.

Example, and a link to the discussion from which this comes...

That little box to the right of my name is, indeed, an automatically embedded hyperlink which will escort you henceforth and hitherto to the very material being quoted.

    You're welcome.
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

        like I just did.
As long as that hyperlink is there, you can go back and see if, in fact, the poster mangled the quote, and go from there.

and if for some reason you need to get a link to a particular post to add into your own post, go to the post in question, look at the upper right of the post at the post number, right click on the number and select, "copy hyperlink" or "copy link location" (it varies from browser to browser)

Then you can paste that link into your post like this:

What happens if you post, copy the hyperlink to that post, then edit and paste the hyperlink to the post in the post itself?

I'm too scared to actually try it, it might cause the Universe to implode....

Is that like when you take the golden screw out of somebody's bellybutton, their butt falls off?

I was reprimanded once for not including the hyperlink in each section of a fragmented quoted post. Like this ...

I just assume the person I am responding to knows everything being quoted is from the single hyperlink. My bad, I guess.

Some people are gonna gripe no matter what you do.

I'll often insist that my accuser provide the ACTUAL QUOTE where I said what they claim I said, and they rarely will provide it, because they know they've twisted my words, and the ACTUAL QUOTE -- IN CONTEXT -- will reveal their chicanery.

Sometimes, they'll provide the actual quote (after several insistences (is that a word?)) and the actual quote is nowhere near what they claimed, but they still insist ... "SEE THERE!!!!"
