The cattle ranches may decrease by 30% per one cattle rancher whose video went viral.
The following is what I hear from a discussion with this rancher.
The problem is not the number of cattle. Instead, there are only about 5 large corporations who handle most meat processing and distribution. This includes Smithfield, JBS, National Beef, Cargill and Tyson. These companies were permitted to have monopolistic purchases of the smaller meat processors. Now that workers are scared to go to work because of COVID-19, the meat processing. So, in this time of the COVID-19 situation, we are facing meat shortages which may also mean that the ranchers cannot sell their cattle.
I wonder if there is a way that entrepreneurs can get involved in this process and help get meat production processing back up to par.
The video I saw:
It seems vital to have some level of self-sufficiency on our basic food supply. If we lose independent cattle ranchers, we lose part of that process -- and we often end up beholden to the controls of the monopolies.
There is a website to address part of the problem -- that of labeling the country of origin. The concerns include the health standards and quality of the meat. There was also discussion on the video of the Brazilian criminals who own two of meat processing companies in the US. The website is: http://demandusabeef.com
