What is the average population of the countries with a higher per million rate?
      What difference would that make?

What is the highest populated country, on the top 20?
      PRC I'm sure.

What is the next populated country?
      Below us? Thailand.

We are not at 2 million for many different reasons, most of them independent of or in spite of Trump:

        1 Projection inaccuracy
-- a) The disease has a lower overall mortality that original estimates due to a high percentage of asymptomatic carriers
-- b) early projections may or may not have accounted for measures that were yet to come (e.g. shelter in place)
        2) Governors took matters into their own hands and against Trumps wishes enacted shelter in place home orders.
---- I would give Cuomo's televised talks to the state of new york a great deal of credit for shaping perceptions in this arena
        3) Governors took matters into their own hands and procured PPE and equipment
        4) congress worked to get financial assistance where it was needed, although severely hampered by Donard Trump and his antics
        5) The media put huge amounts of pressure on Donald Trump and the Administration to stop ignoring this thing and act

I would NOT give the Trump administration much credit at all. Their actions were far more destructive than constructive (and continue to be)

In fact, and more to the point, we didn't need to have as many deaths as we have regardless of what some early predictions might have been. And had the Trump administration actually acted on the information they had in a timely fashion instead of hiding their heads in the sand we would have far less deaths that we now have, and far fewer people waiting to die.

You should know how math works. The US has performed the most test, 13.1 million vs the next highest, Russia at 7.8 million. Since our country is more than double the population, we need to perform over 2 times the test, just to break even with Russia.

            PRC I'm sure.

It depends on the context of course. I would say being 10th given the (former) wealth and power of the USA is bad.

The term you're looking for is 'per capita', not 'average'. Trump also had a hard time with the concept yesterday as it turns out.

              And...?

I had no idea you viewed the USA so poorly that striving to be #1 in everything wasn't a goal. Sad!

And that is simply a lie:

example where you know it is true but are lying (because you've mentioned it too!):

The disease has a lower overall mortality that original estimates due to a high percentage of asymptomatic carriers

example that is just true regardless because semantically it can't be any thing but true unless ALL early projections either did or did not take into account mitigations:

early projections may or may not have accounted for measures that were yet to come (e.g. shelter in place)

examples where if you think they are false, you are just wrong:

Governors took matters into their own hands and against Trumps wishes enacted shelter in place home orders.

as these began, Trump was against this, he eventually came around ... sort of)

Governors took matters into their own hands and procured PPE and equipment

They most cetainly did. Case in point, my home state of Maryland, our governor leveraged a relationship with S. Korea to get tests he otherwise could not get from the federal government (and took steps to ensure the Feds did not confiscate them 1) brought them in via chartered flight to BWI, 2) escorted them under guard to a secured, undisclosed location)

                  • Not true. Testing *when* and *where* it mattered would have done wonders. Hong Kong has very high population density and has a tremendous amount of traffic with PRC every single day. Yet they have done insanely better than we have.

MM, the link I pasted was to a per capita breakdown. If you're too lazy to read the link then...

What quantitative measures tell you that?

                      • I know FLC was saying it wasn't going to be a big deal. Who else did that?

Hong Kong is the 104th most populated country. I guess we should discount all the less populated ones when comparing Coronavirus responses, right? :)

Not at all. The link I pasted showed exactly the data you complained wasn't included.

I get my news from Twitter (and for Coronavirus @BNODesk who have had the best coverage of this issue from day 0). The voices I follow on Twitter were sounding the alarm way, way back from either the end of 2019 or very beginning of 2020.

My wife is from Hong Kong and I was literally in HK back when those protests were starting. The reason HK did better is not because of mistrust for PRC. It's because of lessons learned during SARS / H1N1 which they employed in force this time. In exactly the same way Trump didn't do that, actually.

Do you even know what the protests were about? Or is this just another lame attempt at sounding smart?

It takes a lot of smarts to act dumb. You don't quite have what it takes to pull that off. So you're either MM or another person with the same name (deep Shakespeare cut yo).

Of course it's impractical to be #1 in everything. But we should *want* to get as close as possible, right? What point are you trying to make here? "At least we're not Venezuela"?

                            Sheesh

                              • If you want to point me to where they said that I'll be glad to criticize them. Probably they could have done more. Who minimized Coronavirus in any way at all comparable to FLC? I'll be glad to wag my finger.

The voices I as hearing, such as Dr. Gena Grayson, pointed to publicly available data indicating the serious potential of this virus from day 0. No reason to listen to PRC either way -- the data spoke and speaks for itself.

My question was whether you knew why the protests sprung up. It sounds like you don't. They weren't spontaneous protests because "they don't trust China." There was a specific law which was the genesis. Do you know what that law was?

If you're not MM you're not. You're obviously not who you claim to be.

See, this right here. You either can't read or you're intentionally trolling. Your level of "confusion" in these posts matches very closely with MM's style.

In any case, we'll never prove whether you are who you claim to be. Maybe you just have a crush on MM.
