I don't think he was trying ro impress evangelicals, as evangelicals are already impressed with him, as you've lamented about incessantly on this board. The act is so bizarre and pointless in any political sense in a situation like this, that I suspect there's something else to it.

That's the frothing-at-the-mouth liberal narrative at least. Is there any official confirmation?

Longtime Donald Trump aide Hope Hicks has been identified as having helped hatch the plan to have the president walk across the street from the White House to pose in front of St. John's church – staged event that police and National Guard forces facilitated by using tear gas and rubber bullets to clear away peaceful protesters.

The move was conceived as a way to allow Trump to demonstrate his self-proclaimed role as the 'law and order president' and – came after the president vowed to use the military to restore order in cities across the country.

As a PR move it may have backfired, after global and national media broadcast images of shield-bearing and mounted police using force to clear Lafayette Park, an area whose use as a forum for demonstrations and speech has long been protected.

Had you read the transitively linked articles you would have gotten your wish.

Not to mention that what you think passes for evidence comes from people who don't even qualify as reporters .

Trump has lost Pat Robertson, but do go on.

Pat Robertson has stated in a new video that Donald Trump’s handling of the civil rights protests “isn’t cool” and he’s also sharply criticizing Trump for threatening to use the U.S. military to attack the protesters.

Ok, I will admit I thought I had posted the Salon article which had a link to the NYT article.

Robertson doesn't hate Trump and the throngs who still care what Robertson thinks don't hate Trump. So, as I said, this stunt has hurt Trump.

I don't hate Trump but this isn't good optics. It really backfired.

I've never voted for Trump but was considering voting for him in 2020. This won't affect that. What I am waiting to see is if he puts the US military in US cities for policing. That's the deal breaker.

                        • Updated reporting places the blame on both Hicks and Kremlin Barbie.

Some unnamed source within the Trump White House is now telling the New York Times that Donald Trump was “urged on by his daughter Ivanka” to do the church photo op, and that she was the one who brought a Bible to the photo op. That same source is also saying that it was Hope Hicks who “came up with the visuals” for the photo shoot.

He had just finished talking about the need for mayors and governors to take back the streets.

Lafayette Park was one of the main sites for rioting and St. John's had been vandalized.

This looks like Trump giving a demonstration of what he was telling others needed to be done.

Pat has lost his mind - long ago. Still, I go a little beyond "isn't cool" and don't think using the US military is a good idea. (aside from your misrepresentation of "attacking the protesters")
