The recovery of the canister in the immediate aftermath a chaotic crowd control incident involving multiple police forces is on its own very strong circumstantial evidence which makes a prime facie case that it had been used by the authorities. Recall that the protestors were unruly, had been throwing missiles at the police, and had stashed multiple lethal weapons along the path for use at moments notice. Further add that the President was due in the vicinity shortly and it's no wonder that such force would be employed.

Wait, I thought they were "peaceful protesters".

But isn't it funny how there's supposedly a tear gas cylinder lying around for a random reporter to find, and yet we haven't heard any reports from multiple witnesses who suffered from the effects of tear gas. Now isn't that strange.

You convinced me that they weren't.

Don't need to have an allergy to tear up if the smoke gets directly in your eyes. And tear gas causes uncontrollable tearing, like someone dialed the water works up to full maximum. You don't just "tear up."

    Yes, speaking from experience here.

The loss of moral authority from the US wrt oppressive regimes the world over is the cost of Trump and Barrs reckless actions. How can we criticize Chima or Russia or Turkey when we are willing to gas, shoot at and bully our own protestors for a photo op?

it has not gone unnoticed. China has basically seen this as justification to raise their head high about tianenmen square. Openly mocking the US former status as a 'beacon of light' for democracy.

And the regulars and owners of this website get to stand back and revel in the knowledge they wholeheartedly support this further degradation of US moral authority, and of standing behind and voicing their support for the continuous slide towards authoritarian models and means by this administration.

Only a complete idiot would think that what happened at Lafayette Park is in any way comparable to the slaughtering in cold blood of thousands (BBC now reports that it was 10,000) of actual peaceful protesters (not looters or folks throwing bricks and the like at police)

Unfortunately, it differs in scope, but not in principle. And while I agree that they are not comparable in terms of consequence, in terms of motivation and adherence to principle, it's a real blow to our image in the world.

But I'll not be surprised if you and others don't get it. You've already compromised your basic principles so much in order to continue your defense and support for Trump you may well have lost your capacity to understand why what Trump did could have such an effect.

Things were far worse in decades past, and we were still a "beacon of light". Well, the world "piggy bank" at least.

There are at least 10,000 reasons why you are wrong here.
