Jim, this is an example of "stupid stuff". Even as Biden is downplaying the "Defund Police" mantra, nutty liberals are saying, "no, that's EXACTLY what we mean".

Minneapolis City Council votes to replace police with another model

(The Center Square) – The Minneapolis City Council unanimously passed a resolution intending to disband their police department and create a new model of public safety in response to the death of George Floyd.

The resolution states the Council will start a year-long process of research and community engagement to discover a replacement.

It was a really DUMB phrase that has been embraced by the left, but many of the left are pushing back, because it's... well... REALLY DUMB.

Minneapolis appears to have ZERO intention of reforming the police department or replacing it with another police department. NOTHING AT ALL like Camden, which is what you initially tired to compare this to.

So, please stop this really STUPID stuff like "ya'll [sic] know better".
The first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him.

That appears to be what Minneapolis is doing, though they won't call them that - but the objection is to 'police' with guns.

CP, you have no idea what their intentions are for replacing the current police dept. which is made obvious in the article you cited.

"The resolution states the Council will start a year long process of research and community engagement to discover a replacement". A replacement, not no law enforcement.

Actually, I do, Jim, because I've been reading up on this quite a bit, and I have access to material you don't.

It is clear that it will not be a police department as we know it -- now, GRANTED, some of these MOE-rons may come to their senses, as the Mayor is already pushing back, but you, my friend, are in deep denial.

Why do you think so many liberal politicians are trying to distance themselves from this nuttiness?

Why is anyone even fighting them on this? Just let them have their way. If it works, fine, but most likely it will just expose their idiocy to the world and make any future demands of theirs ignored or ridiculed. Also hold the government officials (mayors, city council) personally responsible for any personal harm or deaths that result from their "reform" - they want to remove qualified immunity from the cops, so fine, they can be responsible for their "new" police force or social worker network.

Because that was exactly what the Minneapolis City Council meant when they overwhelmingly voted to defund the police. As Steve Fletcher, a city council member since 2017 put it:

I am one of many on the Council, including the Council President and the Chair of Public Safety, who are publicly supporting the call to disband our police department and start fresh with a community-oriented, non-violent public safety and outreach capacity.

They don't want the police (law enforcement), they want social workers, mental health workers and counselors to replace them. He wants to "reimagine what public safety means," and "reinvest in cultural competency and mental health training, de-escalation and conflict resolution." Screw law enforcement. That just escalates problems.

So why do you keep pretending that the abolishment isn't the goal for many of those screaming for the police to be defunded?

I think this is why, of late, some of the nutters in Minneapolis have been trying to defer this to the November election.

If those favoring this idiocy were the only ones to suffer the consequences of such actions I'd heartily agree.

No, that's just your reading into it what you will. You think they mean to have social workers go after felons, murderers and bank robbers, etc. Don't be so ridiculous.

I think what will happen is that law abiding citizens will move out, and the criminal element will discover safe harbor.

They are not REALLY felons or murderers or bank robbers. They are just misunderstood and need counseling. The bank robber just needed the money more than the bank did. The murderer was just acting selfishly and needs to learn how to share, and the felon isn't a felon, that's just the white man's rules meant to hold down the minorities.

And they won't even have to look for new jobs because all of the companies will be moving out of the city too and probably take their workers with them.
